In this tutorial I will be covering both Pro Tools LE 6.4 and 6.7. What things changed from version to version will be explained at the appropriate time in the tutorial. The one thing that I need to let you know up front is that the Digi 001 interface is no longer supported as a Pro Tools 6.7. However, the Mbox, the Digi 002 and the 002 Rack are fully supported. Since Digidesign releases updates and patches to Pro Tools LE on a fairly regular basis, I do not want to limit the scope of this movie as far as system requirements. In order, to see if your computer will successfully run Pro Tools, I suggest that you go to Digidesign's website and click on the support button in the button bar. From this support screen, you can click on the compatibility button and you will want to look at the column for Pro Tools LE systems to find your interface. As I said at the beginning, you can see that the 001 is no longer supported in 6.7. I have a Digi 002 Rack and I am currently running a Macintosh. So I will click accordingly. Notice that Mac OS 9 is no longer supported. From the Digi 002 Rack for the Mac page, I see that I need to be running Mac OS 10.3 also called panther by Apple computer. However, you may want to investigate further because down below into the right I see that Pro Tools LE 6.7 will not run on OS releases 10.3.3 and 10.3.6. If I were running one of these versions, I would have to download an update from Apple to take it to one of these versions. Also, if Apple were to release another interim update, I might want to check with Digi's website to make sure it was supported before I install it. If I scroll back to the top to see if my particular computer is supported, here is the list. I will click on power Mac G5 because that's what I am actually using and I see that the dual 2 gigahertz power Mac G5, the first generation is supported. And I can scroll down to see if there are any qualifications to that. Let's try this whole process for my Pc. I will go back to the main compatibility page and for the Mbox which is what I have connected to my Pc, I will click Windows XP. Notice how Windows 98, NT and 2000 are not on the list. For a Pc user, it's just a bit more complicated and you have to know a couple more technical details up front. First of all, I see that Service Pack 2 is now qualified but that I should probably read Digidesign's recommended installation steps to make sure Windows is adequately prepared for Pro Tools LE. Secondly and since I am running with an Mbox on my Pc, I need to make sure that I am not running with the incorrect Intel chip sets. Your system's BIOS or your computer's system manual should let you know which chip set you are using. Or if you want to click `is my Pc compatible with Pro Tools', there's a walk through which first checks your processor and then your chip set. The chip set section includes a link to utility that you can download which will help you identify your chip set. Now that you are thoroughly confused, let me reassure you that most computers manufactured today and this includes laptops are compatible with Pro Tools LE or will be very soon. There are three more things I want to show you from Digidesign's support page. The first is the technical support tab. From here you can go to Digidesign's technical document library where you can download pdf versions of almost every manual created for every piece of Digi hardware and software. I have used this resource many times. Second, is the download screen. I suggest you check this page at least once a month to look for updates for your particular system, specifically the CS updates page. These are special customer support updates that are posted every few weeks to fix minor problems and hiccups with the latest version of Pro Tools. We can see here for example, that at the time I am creating this movie, Pro Tools LE 6.7 CS 8 has been posted for all users of all systems both HD and LE, both Mac and Pc. If I click on the customer support update for my system, I can view all the little problems that have been solved with these customer support patches since Pro Tools 6.7 was released. The rule of thumb for the download site is to read things carefully to make sure that you know what you are doing and then download and install the appropriate patches and updates. You will also want to check for plug-in updates from both Digidesign and from third party vendors. For example, short while back, they had a plug-in update for both HD and LE systems running 6.4. Almost every third party vendor gives you the ability to download updates and patches from their website and I suggest you visit them about once a month as well. The last area that you should check is the user conference section. Scroll down to the Pro Tools LE systems section and click on the link for the system that you use, whether a Mac or Pc. You can also check the Pro Tools host tips and techniques. After registering, you can post your questions for those in the know and solve problems in a community of users rather than all by yourself.
