IPv6 is the next generation of the suite of protocols that make the Internet possible. By mid 2011, the available TCP/IP addresses will be exhausted and moving from IPv4 to IPv6 will no longer be a good idea, it will be an absolute requirement. Marketers are quick to announce that "IPv6 provides integrated and interoperable technologies to enable exciting new scenarios for personal and enterprise computing." IT technicians and administrators fully understand that first and foremost, IPv6 will be a technical challenge. Re-building a 747 airliner while it is still in flight is one way to look at it. In this course, Mark Long will teach you the new concepts, terminologies, and processes of IPv6 to help you get ready for this exciting, albeit challenging, new functionality. Hello. I'd like to welcome you to the Virtual Training Company presentation of an Introduction to IP Version 6. My name is Mark Long, and I'll be your instructor for this course, and we are going to dig into IP Version 6, and look and see what it offers, what it's going to bring us, and how it's going to change the way we use the Internet. There's been a lot of information out there in the media about the exhaustion of the IP Version 4 Addresses, and as we've gotten tighter and tighter on the number of addresses that we have available publically, we've also seen an explosion in these things like iPhones, and Android phones, and all of these various addressed, cool little technological gadgets that do all kind of neat things. And, trust me. If you own an Android phone or an iPhone, you can really kind of divide productivity and coolness in your life to a hard demarcation. You know, pre-iPhone, Android phone, post-iPhone, Android phone. It just really changes things. But the magic comes from the fact that this thing has an IP address, and as those things proliferate, they're putting a severe strain on the IP Addresses. So IP Version 6 promises to give us these nearly unlimited IP Addresses. It's a re-write of the IP Protocol, that whole TCP/IP Suite that we've had since the Internet started. So this is the chance to go back and rebuild it and correct some of the weaknesses. And I have to tell you, in a lot of cases, that has happened. So, we're going to go through IP Version 6. We'll tackle those massive 128-bit hexadecimal-based IP Addresses, and then we'll talk about all the other functionalities that's in IP Version 6, and just kind of help you get your head around what's going on in this new Protocol that's coming our way. As a matter of fact, it's already being implemented, and it's really going to help you, both in your career and your efficiency day to day to understand how this is working. So, thanks for being here, and let's get started.
