This Database Optimization course provides viewers with important techniques and checklists to configure, monitor, and manage their databases. You will learn how to develop a tuning strategy, explore the tuning and diagnostic tools, understand the relational database model and implications on performance, evaluate the application for efficient design, structure, and other factors affecting performance and evaluate hardware for effects on performance. Join us as we review best practices in designing, optimizing, and maintaining your database. You will benefit from this course whether you have some experience with optimizing databases or are just starting out. Work files are included. Welcome to the Database Optimization course. It's presented by the Virtual Training Company. My name is Lauri Madson and I will be your instructor. Our goals are three-fold: we want to ensure the proper design of our database; get the best performance possible out of it; and get optimal optimization to ensure both the maximum performance and reliability of our database. Now keep in mind when we use the term "optimization" that it does not apply to just the data within our system. We need to talk about our actual network and all the resources throughout the system: what type of CPU we are using; how many people are actually on the network at any given time; what our users are doing in the database ? these are all important components of working with database optimization. Internally it's very important to ensure that our indexes are set up correctly, that our queries are written correctly and that we're taking the maximum advantages of the tools that are contained within our database. Our focus is going to be to understand the concepts of optimization. Now please keep in mind that these concepts apply to all databases. I will, however, be doing my demonstrations on SQL Server. Now just a footnote. Some of you may be referring to Sequel Server as SQL Server. They are one and the same. Nomenclature varies. I think some of it depends on whether or not we worked with the original version of SQL, which was referred to as Sequel. The name changed over the years. The concepts contained within these videos are going to be universal to SQL, Access, Oracle, MySQL, any database that you're using. It's just the screen shots and how you get to the tools that will vary. I also would like to start by talking about a few very important components. Number 1: please remember, no two databases are the same. That means we cannot take a concept and necessarily apply it to our situation. We must research and evaluate each of these concepts; never apply a new concept to a production database without testing; and ensure you have a backup. Most importantly that backup needs to be accurate and restorable. I always recommend trying to restore a database before changing it. Here's where the use of a test network comes in. Create a backup and then restore it on a test network. Apply any of these concepts to that test network before actually going into your production database and err on the side of conservatism. If you're not sure that a solution is correct don't try it. Talk to others, do your research, maybe even go to another network technician and really discuss the concept before applying it. Remember, our production databases are normally one of the most vital links within our company. You must ensure that you are thoroughly prepared before applying a concept. One never knows what'll happen in a database and it goes back to our first thought: no two databases are the same. We cannot expect every technique to work accordingly.
