Linux is the most important operating system on the Internet. It's recognized everywhere as the cost-effective way to operate all kinds of servers. With the support of powerhouses like IBM, Dell, HP, and Sun, demand for Linux servers is growing. Ubuntu has quickly become the most popular distribution among Linux users. And Ubuntu Server edition is quickly becoming the way to implement Linux in the enterprise. My name is Mike Jang and I'll be your guide through this VTC course designed to help you administer Ubuntu Server Edition. As I create this video, this course is the number one requested course from VTC. You've asked and we're responding. This course is based on the latest long-term support release of Ubuntu Server Edition; code name Hardy Heron. I focus on version 8.04.1, the July 2008 updated. The original release was made in April 2008. That was version 8.04 and Hardy Heron has long-term support available from Canonical, which is the corporate sponsor of Ubuntu. Ubuntu Server edition is supported through the year 2013. It's one area where the server differs from the Desktop. As the Desktop environment, it's supported only through the year 2011. As its Ubuntu Server, Canonical has included a specialized server kernel, optimized for Server and Enterprise environments. If you have a physical system upon which you want to install a number of virtual machines, install Ubuntu Server but be aware; the default installation or Ubuntu Server does not include a graphical user interface. If you so prefer, it's fairly easy to install the graphical Desktop of your choice on an Ubuntu Server systems. Alternatively, you can just set up remote access to the Ubuntu Server and then administer that system with graphical tools if and as desired. While my focus in this course is on the Command Line, I'll also show you how to set up remote administration from the Command Line, as well as with practical tools. If you're interested in related courses from VTC, there are some excellent options available. In the certification arena there are courses available for the Ubuntu Certified Professional Exam, as well as for the related Linux Professional Institute Exams at both level one and level two. Of course, VTC also offers more general courses related to Linux; first on Ubuntu Linux, more focused on the Desktop environment and Linux for people who are newer to this operating system. Thanks and in the next video we'll start describing some system requirements.
