Web Concepts and Technologies / HTML Editors
Subtitles of the Movie
Obviously if you’re going to be doing some web publishing, you’re not going to just need to know about HTML, you’re going to also have to have some familiarity with what's available in the world of HTML editors. So that's what this module is about. Now it’s very important to note that because HTML is just text, an HTML file is nothing but text, any text editor can be used to create or modify HTML documents. Any text editor. Now just about every operating system there ever was comes with a text editor. Windows comes with Notepad and it’s one of the simplest programs that you could ever use and that's all you need to do HTML. That's all you need, now obviously that's not really the optimum way of doing it but it’s always absolutely necessary. So, Notepad is available, you can use that if you need to. So really you don't need to go out and buy anything. Everything that you need comes with Windows. There is actually one other thing you need, you need an ftp program that also comes with windows. Believe it or not windows has a built in ftp program, we'll have a look at that briefly later on because it’s not a very good one but at least it's a functional one, just like Notepad, it's a functional text editor. Okay, obviously there’s more to it than that. Let’s have a look, there are three main types of program that can be used to create and edit HTML documents. Now we just mentioned the first of those three, which is basic text editors, anything like Notepad will do the job. Secondly, we've got advanced text editors that are, if you like, purpose built for doing HTML. They offer things like color-coding of HTML syntax, dedicated tag insertion, TextPad is an example of that, I'll show you TextPad right now. So here is that same document, my sample.HTML loaded up in text pad. Now the differences here is that you can see that the actual tags are in blue and the quoted text is in sort of turquoise green color and so on. Now this helps you as a developer because you can see more quickly where is your code and where is your text. I’m not going to go into all the other benefits that advanced text editors like this offer but needless to say they’re many. Let’s go back to these slides. Thirdly, we have a very important category called ‘WYSIWYG’ editors, ‘WYSIWYG if you’re not familiar with the term is what you see is what you get, WYSIWYG what you see is what you get. WYSIWYG editors where the editors screen resembles the final rendered page. What does that mean? That means you actually look like you’re editing the document as it appears in the browser. Now when you have edited it, the editor will then generate the HTML code for you, what this means is you don't need to know HTML. Let’s have a look at these in more detail because they are very important, they also are the most sophisticated. Two examples of these programs are Macromedia Dreamweaver and Microsoft FrontPage, both of these are very excellent programs for developing websites. My personal recommendation is that if you’re reasonably new to website, web publishing and web developing, you start with something like Microsoft FrontPage and if you’re an experienced web publisher then you probably want to upgrade yourself to Macromedia Dreamweaver. Now that's just my opinion, all these programs, not just these two, but all the programs that fit into this category have this enormous benefit that you don't need to learn HTML. You simply type the page in as you want it to look on the browser, formatted you know click on the bold button to make things bold and it will actually create the HTML code for you that corresponds to what you see on the screen. However if you need to you can usually go off and edit the HTML directly if you need to be very specific about something that perhaps the program can’t generate for you but you still need it to happen. These programs are not free. FrontPage costs I think about 90 U.S dollars, Dreamweaver is considerably more expensive, and many of these include website management tools as well as their editing capabilities. If you don't know what website management is all about, you will later, don't worry about that. I’ll show you an example now of our little sample web page run up in let’s say Microsoft FrontPage, let’s have a look at that. Here we are in Microsoft FrontPage, this is FrontPage XP and you can see obviously there is our HTML code and we could simply go and edit it here if we needed to. We could say alright there’s, there’s the word lazy dog, I want to replace those with something else. Alternatively, and this is where these tools become extremely powerful, notice that down here I’ve clicked on the HTML view out of the three views available. I can click on normal view which is what you usually do your editing in FrontPage in and I see this instead, which means that I can actually modify the document here. I can change, I can say right that's going to be italicized and I’m going to change that font color to purple and that picture I can just make it a bit bigger and I can do all of that and then I can go back and look at the HTML and it has changed the font color there for me it's made the picture bigger, it’s got a different height and width now, it does all of the HTML generation for me. This is an extremely powerful and fast way of doing things. You've got all these standard word processing, typical word processing buttons, bullets, numbering, centered, bold, underline, change your font and so forth and you don't need to know HTML to do any of it. It obviously helps if you have some knowledge of HTML but it's not absolutely necessary. Needless to say, if you can get a good one of these such as FrontPage or Dreamweaver, then your HTML web publishing and developing life will be much faster and hopefully much more fruitful and there is obviously more to it than that. FrontPage for example comes with a considerable number of website management tools, navigation and reports and so forth that are not immediately obvious but they’re in there and they make it even a more powerful package. Anyway that's enough on HTML editors, I wanted to show you the spectrum, you have seen something as simple as notepad and as sophisticated as FrontPage and its up to you now to choose which one you want.
