Web Concepts and Technologies / The Internet
Subtitles of the Movie
The course begins here in chapter 2. Recall that I said that the only pre requisites for this course are an ability essentially to surf the net. I expect that you would have at least a loose understanding, if not a technical understanding of what the Internet actually is. But in order for you to become a Web publisher, there are several concepts that it’s important that you understand. So this chapter is going to deal with explaining those concepts to you and I’ll show you examples as we go along. There is one question that I always ask my classes when I’m teaching Web publishing or something similar. I say to them 'what's the difference between the Internet and the Web?' These are terms that you usually hear interchangeably, people say ‘oh yes I’m just going on to the Internet to surf and do this and so forth’ or ‘I’m just going to go now onto the Web and look up such and such’. So here’s my question to you, is there a difference between the Internet and the World Wide Web? Just pause the movie for a moment and have a think about that. Well, the differences are as follows. The Internet is a vast collection of computers as I’ve written here connected together for the purposes of sharing information In other words it's every thing, it's the whole thing, it's the computers, it's the connection, it's the information, it's the whole lot. On the other hand, the Web, the World Wide Web is a collection of interlinked documents available for viewing on the Internet. Interlinked documents, we know, we know we can click on links to get from one document to another. Notice I’ve used available for viewing on the Internet, so the Web is a bunch of things that's on the Internet, one thing if you like that's on the Internet Let’s summarize this; it's quite easy to summarize the differences here. The Internet is the network of computers and the Web is one of the things you can do with this network. Just one of the things, there are actually a whole collection of other things you can do with the Internet besides use the Web and of course you’d be familiar with email as one of the very prime things that you do on the Internet that is not Web browsing, others include news groups, chatting, FTP and so on I just wanted to make all that clear because I mean, I hear quite experienced people saying oh yes I just went on to the Web to check my email and unless you’re using hotmail, that's pretty difficult to do. Anyway now you know. That's a simple concept. Let's move on.
