They include a pay-for-placement service that some search engines offer. Now we’re talking about the indexes here not necessarily the directories, some directories also offer the same system. Works as follows. You simply pay a certain monthly or yearly fee to the search engine in question and they will feature your site on one of their special categories. They’ll either come up at the beginning of the search engine listings or they’ll appear in special featured site links or both and some search engines such as Alta Vista will actually rank your site more highly in their index if there are other pages on the Internet that contain links to your site. Now I’m talking about quality links, these are not just pages that you setup yourself that contain links to your own site The search engines are pretty good at spotting this sort of con. So if that's the sort of thing that you want to do and it does actually help where do you go to get it, well there are some services that exists exchange programs that will set up such links for you. Essentially you put your links, sorry, you put links to other peoples sites on your site and other people put links to your site on their site. Now that doesn't mean that you’ll have to clutter up your site with a bunch of unnecessary links. It can actually be done in such a way that the search engines are fooled and you’re not actually displaying those links at all on your site. If you want to set these up, there are free to do so but they take a little bit of time to make the appropriate adjustments to your web site’s structure.
