Programs and Services Youll Need / Search Engines

Subtitles of the Movie

Once you've got your website created, once you've created the domain name for it and linked the two together, you’re probably going to want to register your site in a search engine, the reason for this is that you want as many people as possible to come to your website. Well theoretically you do, most people do. You may have some secret website some where that you don't want anybody to come and visit but if that's the case, why did you put it there? You can drive a whole bunch more traffic to your website by listing your site in a search engine. If you’re not familiar with what a search engine actually is, it is a computer somewhere on the Internet that is storing a vast database of the contents of many of the other websites on the Internet, not all of them, in fact probably no more than about 20 percent of them. Probably not even that. But if you get your website listed in the search engine, that means that your website becomes part of that database and the contents of your website also become part of that database. So people can then search that database for particular content and hopefully your website will come up if it is appropriate to do so. Listing in most of the major search engines such as Alta Vista and Excite and Yahoo and Hotbot is free. You don't have to pay for the privilege and later on in this course; we will discuss how to get your pages listed in a search engine How to get them listed appropriately and how to get them listed very visibly, in other words how to get your site come up when people do a particular search.
