Programs and Services Youll Need / Other Programs

Subtitles of the Movie

We've hit all of the high points now of the programs that you’re going to need for a website creation, HTML editors, FTP programs, image manipulation and website management. There are a lot of small accessories or tools if you like that fills in the gaps. I'd like to go into those now, well just some examples of those; there is an ever increasing list of programs out there on the Internet that will help you in some way shape or form. This is just a small selection. Such programs include, color pickers. A color picker is used to tell you the exact color that is being used on some particular thing that's on your screen at the moment. For example the slide you’re looking at the moment has got a sort of a turquoise light green back ground. I might want a web page to have exactly the same color back ground. Maybe that's the colors of my company or the colors of my country or my net ball team or something like that and a color picker will enable you to essentially sample that color and use that color as one of the colors that make up your web page. The information that it gives you can then be fed into your HTML program to give you an identical color background. Some of them are quite sophisticated; I recommend one called Huey, h-u-e-y, which is obviously a play on the word hue. We've got button factories; these are very common and very, very useful. A button factory is a program that will generate a series of images, each with say, a word on them or a couple of words, these buttons can then be placed on your web page and linked to various other parts of your website. You can use the font of your choice, when we learn about fonts, you’ll find that your choice of fonts is usually somewhat limited when it comes to web pages but when it comes to web graphics you have no limit what so ever. So you tend to use a button factory to create the myriad of buttons that is needed on your website. Animated gif editors, these are for creating simple animations on your website. I’m sure you have seen animations around the place, so I don't need to go into what they are but you obviously need some kind of program for creating those. Now under the heading of HTML generators, we have programs to generate site maps. They run through every HTML document in your system and generate a little page that contains one link to each one of those pages, hopefully hierarchically organized or some other way or perhaps drop down menus or a pull down list box or something like that, they generate those for you. We’ve also got HTML generators that create thumbnail views of images like photos or slide show views of images and photos, these are very handy if you've got a large number of photos and you wish to display them in a aesthetic way on your web page. If you've got 700 photos to display, you don't really want to be manually creating 700 web pages. You can get one program to generate them all for you and we've got programs that would generate meta tags and meta tag is often used with search engines and we’ll be learning more about those when we get to the search engines chapter. We've got programs that would generate scripts for you like JavaScript and VBScript and we've got programs that will create cascading style sheets for you hopefully in a WYSIWYG format. Finally we've got programs that run through your website and validate the links that are in your website and validate the HTML to make sure you haven't made any mistakes in order to check for compatibility with various browsers and so forth. Now, if you’re wondering where you can get all of these, there is a vast number out there. You basically just need to go to one of the shareware sites on the Internet. You can go to www.shareware.com or something similar. I'll just show you one example one that I use, I usually go to quite a lot, it’s called Tucows. This is one of the Tucows mirrors, Tucows if you’re interested in stands for the ultimate collection of windows software and here is a selection of the categories that they have available. We'd be particularly interested in the HTML tools section; there is the color picker some accessories, three different levels of editors, special effects, style sheets, validators, XML tools and so on. There is a lot there to choose from. Those are just the categories and there's a few more things besides. Anyway it's a great place to go, you can get your FTP clients there, you can get just about any kind of program that you like there. Tucows is one of the better ones but they are many, many out there. So that covers all the software that you actually need to create some sort of halfway decent website. What about the services that are necessary for the same website. Let’s have a look at those now.
