Now the first time you go out to VMware.com and look around, you're probably going to be a little bit intimidated by all the products that they offer out there and they're all virtualization products in some form, providing different functionalities. But I want to really kind of focus in on Workstation and let you know exactly what it is. Workstation is, a Virtual Machine Software Suite, now this is kind of the predominant defacto standard out there in a lot of [00:00: places for virtualization, for a lot of good reasons. Workstation is going to provide the ability to run a fully functioning computer in a virtual environment and the best way to think about this is, as what's known as a VM or a virtual machine. And a great way to think of this, that other computer or virtual machine will run inside a window on your desktop. So I can run one operating system inside another operating system on a single machine. It is some incredible technology and there's lots of reasons to do this. You can test programs, you can look at previews, you can do all kind of stuff. Now the operating system that is running on the physical machine, so if I open up a laptop up and I boot it up, what's booting up there is the host operating system and that is my host computer. I will then install Workstation onto that machine and create virtual machines but that base machine is always considered the Host Machine. And I can run these virtual machines, I can run more than one as long as I have enough RAM on my Host System, then as long as I have enough memory I can run virtual machines all I want to and also need disk space for each one of these virtual machine's virtual disks. But these virtual machines can run simultaneously, so as a result, I can load a machine up with RAM and some disk space and I can actually create a fully working network out there and test 4, 5, 6 machines that are networked together and I can test client server applications. I can test client server applications with bandwidth issues and all sorts of things. Now each virtual machine or each VM runs it's own operating system or it's own OS. So on my Host System I could be running Windows 7, in a virtual machine I could be running Windows Server 2008. On another virtual machine I could be running Windows Server 2000 and then another one, I could be running Windows XP Professional. So and then I can get under to Ubuntu, Linux, all other kinds of virtual machines as well, really, really neat technology. Now Workstation is probably one of your best entry level ways to get into virtualization and then I can pretty safely say, with confidence, that Workstation is the best entry level paid virtualization solution. Now if you go out to buy Workstation it's going to cost you somewhere around 200 bucks, generally you see it for 199, they'll run specials from time to time but you're still going to have to pay a fair amount of money for this. Now Workstation is designed to create, manage and share virtual machines, pretty neat stuff. It also gives you a lot of other features as well, you can take Snapshots of virtual machines and rollback to that point, you can do virtual networking. You can set up networks between virtual machines, just among themselves, you can connect them to the outside world, you can do all kinds of things. You can clone machines, you can very quickly make a copy of a virtual machine, much, much faster than installing the operating system on another machine. And then you need to be aware, you're going to hear about VMware Player. VMware Player is the free option, totally free, it is a stripped down version of Workstation. You get a lot fewer features but VMware Player is generally is used to just open a virtual machine up and run it and get the functionality out of that machine. So anyway, that's a real quick overview of Workstation, we're going to look at a lot of these features as we move through the course here.
