Learning never stops and learning Unix System Administration Essentials definitely doesn't stop. We've covered what we thought were the most essential aspects and topics that you'd need to know to manage a Unix system from a very basic level. However, you shouldn't stop learning there. There are many resources available to help you find additional information on system administration topics, tips, tools, utilities, commands and ways of doing things. First of all there's the big Internet. Google it, or use your favorite search engine, of course, to find out more about the topics that you may be weak on or may not understand enough in Unix System Administration. Setup Unix boxes. We've shown you how we can use VMWare to set up multiple Unix boxes on a single computer and administer them without doing any damage to real production servers. Also look at FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD. Look at their communities, look at the Linux distributions that are out there as well and get good documentation and tips and hints from those sights. The FreeBSD Project site out there is phenomenal. It has a great documentation site to go with it. There are also training sites, free how-to downloads, ebooks, FAQs, user manuals and so forth that are out there to help you in your day-to-day job of managing and monitoring your Unix system. Now, one piece of advice here is don't try tools on the live network first. Build them in a lab to try them out on and we talked, once again, about VMWare. The actual network you can plug stuff into is good but it can be expensive and difficult to reconfigure that network. What you may want to do is use virtual machines as we've talked about. In any case, the best thing you can do is get experience, whether it's in a VMWare virtual machine or in a lab or actually sitting on the system. Get out there, get that experience, become a good Unix System Administrator.
