Ubuntu Linux / Downloading Ubuntu Linux Live CD

Subtitles of the Movie

In this tutorial we will talk about how to actually download the Ubuntu Linux live CD. As you can see here on the Ubuntu Linux homepage there is a link on the right hand side called download that will take one to a page that describes how and where to download the CD image. This CD image is a 700 megabyte file. So, please be aware that this download will take quite some time. It's much preferable to do it if one has a broadband connection. If one doesn't have a broadband connection one may want to visit the get Ubuntu page for other options including the free CD's that can be shipped as well as third party vendors that sell CD's for a very low price, just a few dollars and we'll ship them to your home. At this time there are two Ubuntu releases available. The newest release and a previous release with long term support for purposes of this tutorial we will go with the newest release, so clicking on this link will take one to a page where one can choose a download location. I will choose North America, United States and then one of the mirrors in the United States. There are then three links that are available. The first is the actual CD image for desktop and laptop PC's. This is the one that most people will use. This is the one that one would use for any kind of Windows based PC. There's also a CD image for the Apple Macintosh and other installation options including a 64 bit CD image, server installation CD's and others. As you can see, clicking on this link as you can see in the task bar down at the very bottom shows you the link to the actual dot ISO image. That is the actual 700 megabyte image that will be download and then burned onto a blank CD-ROM. Therefore at this time what we will want to do is right click on this link and choose save link as. A dialogue box will pop up showing the file name here Ubuntu, the current version number, desktop, meaning desktop PC's, I-386 means Windows based PC's. Simply select a location where one wants to download this CD ISO image and click save. The download will begin and will take quite some time. While it is downloading, might be a good opportunity to look at the instructions on how to burn the CD to a blank disk. This will be covered in another tutorial but this page does describe in quite some detail, the tools that can be used to burn the CD-ROM in Windows and in Mac OS X as well as Ubuntu, itself. That's the end of this tutorial. Thank you very much.
