Add More Users with Users Admin. The other method for creating users, at least as specified in the UCP curriculum relates to the users-admin command. When started in the GUI, it opens the User Settings Tool as shown here. I click the Unlock Button, I select my account or any account in the Admin group, I enter the appropriate password and click Authenticate. I have to remember my password, of course, and now I have full privileges to the User Settings Tool. I click Add User to open the New User Account Window. Under the Account Tab, all I absolutely have to enter is the user name as well as the password. The profile I select determines what's selected in the User Privileges Tab. For the purpose of this demonstration, I select Unprivileged, which deselects all the options under the User Privileges Tab. What you select under this tab determines the group membership for this new user. These are groups as specified in the etc/ group and etc/ghsadow configuration files. Let's go over these one by one. Access external storage devices automatically. That makes this user a member of the Plug Deb group and allows them to access things like USB keys and external drives. Adminster the system; that makes the user a member of the Admin group and gives that user sudo privileges. Now that mouthful, allow the use of FUSE file systems, etcetera, etcetera allows the user to mount remote file systems, such as over a network. Connect to the Internet using a modem; makes this user a member of the Div group and gives that user download access. Manage printers; makes the user a member of the LP Admin group and makes that user a print administrator. Monitor system logs; that makes a user a member of the ADM group. And if you look in the var/log directory, you'll note that the ADM group is the group owner of a number of log files. Send and receive faxes; makes the user a member of the Fax group and gives that user such privileges on connected fax modems. Share files with the local network; you may not see that on your system if you haven't installed the samba file server. If you do see it on your system, activating this option makes the user a member of the samba Share group, which allows the user to share things like their home directory with other systems on the network. The use audio devices option makes that user a member of the audio group. To review available audio devices, you can run the command as shown. Use CD-ROM drives gives that user privileges to CD/DVD drives or any devices with CD-ROM in the device. If you actually have a floppy drive, this option gives you privileges to mount said drives. The use modems group or the use modems option makes that user a member of the dial-out group. For a user to use a modem completely, that user has to be a member of the dial-out DIV and I would think the fax modem group as well. The use scanners options makes that user a member of the scanners group. No big surprise there. And you get a similar result if you select use tape drives. That user becomes a member of the tape group. Now let's take a quick look at the third tab. I click Advanced and I see a default home directory for the new user named after the user name. I have a selection of different shells. I can select a main group for this particular user and generally a user should belong to their own group. And by default, the user ID is set to the next available number above a thousand. If I clicked OK, I'd see that user in the User Settings Window.
