Installing Ubuntu Linux / The Text Installer
Subtitles of the Movie
The Ubuntu Text Installer. The other Ubuntu Linux Installer is based on that originally developed for Debian Linux. Not surprisingly, it's known as the Debian Installer. Text Installation is available from the alternate CD or the DVD. If you're starting from the DVD, select a logical option. In the case of Hardy Heron, The option is called Install in text mode. The actual name of the option has varied over the years. For most steps, the Text installer provides additional options and flexibility for customizing and monitoring the installation. Real Ubuntu administrators, in other words, people who passed the UCP exam and get the high paying jobs in real life understand Text mode installations. As I can't go over every text mode option, I'll just go over the highlights with screenshots in the next several videos. Be aware, the order of steps may vary slightly by release or even depending on whether you're running the Text mode installation from the DVD or the alternate CD. The installation process starts with a choice of languages followed by countries associated with a location. In this case, associated with the language, note the countries shown here are all associated with the English language. This can be a bit problematic if you're in a country not associated with a language that you're using. You can have the system detect the keyboard layout based on keys which you're prompted to type or and specify and customize the keyboard directly. Either option takes several steps. The Text mode installer then detects the CD or DVD drive or drives and loads installer packages from that drive, unless you boot at the minimal network installation CD, DVD described in an earlier video. In that case, the installation packages are loaded over the network. It also configures the system on the local network based on a configured network card. If there's no DHCP server available, you're prompted to configure network settings manually. The next major decision, and what we'll look at in the next video is associated with partitioning. Thanks, and on to the next part of the installation process.
