On the whole so far in this course we've been creating projects that have predetermined settings that match conventional DVD output. For example when we've set up a project so far, albeit a temporary project for illustrative purposes we've looked at the PAL format and we've also looked at the NTSC format. Now of course these aren't the only formats that we might want to use with our projects. So what we'll do in this tutorial, we'll look at how we can instantly match the properties of our video files so that they are used to create our project size. As you can see with this project at the moment by looking below our monitor view there, it's being set up to use the PAL format of 720 by 576. And running at 25 frames per second. And of course if we want to adjust this then as we've seen before we would just come up to File and then drop down to Properties. And with our Project Properties Dialog Box now open then we can see at a glance that our width is set at 720 and the height at 576. And all the other properties that are applied when we use this PAL format. Right. I'll just cancel that because what I want to do is I want to create a new project. And we can instantly do this by just coming up to File and dropping down to New. Again we've seen this before and here in our Templates drop down reveal then we can see all these different templates that we could use and perhaps we could adapt them just slightly so that they suit our material better. However, that's not really what I want to do. So I'll hit Cancel. What I want to do is I want to match the video properties of a particular sequence of files exactly so that then they determine our project settings. Now to be able to do this is really easy. First of all I need to create a project so I'll go up to File once more and then drop down to New. And now over here, see this button right at the far right there? Well this is the Match Media Video Settings Button that comes to our rescue. And clicking on here opens up our Video Folder and then we can choose one of these files at random. I'll just scroll down to here, down to the bottom and I think I'll choose this one. Now I know all these video files are all the same in terms of their dimensions and the frame rate because they were all filmed with the same video camera. And so if I just select one at random as I say I'll go for this one, then down here in the Properties area I can see the attributes for this particular sequence of video files. And as you can see the attributes are 1920 by 1080 for our dimensions. And it's running at a frame rate of 29.97, i.e. NTSC and it's these attributes that I want to use to set up a new project. So I'll just click on Open and therefore the Properties for this video file have now been used exactly to set up our new project dimensions. And here in the New Project Dialog you can see my template is indicated as custom. And there it says 1920 by 1080 and the frame rate of 29.97. And you can see the frame rate down here is indicated at 29.97 as well and as I alluded to a few moments ago this is running at the NTSC format. So I'll use this and I know that every other file from this folder that I bring in subsequently will match this because they're all the same size. Incidentally if you think you're going to be working on a lot of projects using these dimensions then notice this checkbox down at the bottom, Start all New Projects with these Settings. Well by checking in there you'll be able to create all subsequent projects using these attributes. Now I'm going to leave it unchecked just in case I change things later on. It's unlikely but you never know. So I'll just OK it and so we can see if we look over here below my monitor window, that my Project Settings have now been set at 1920 by 1080 and at this screen resolution we can't quite see my frame rate of 29.97. We haven't got any assets at the moment in this project. All we've done is we've selected a movie file to inform Vegas these are the settings I want to use for this particular project. We have now got to bring in our video files so I'll click on the third button along here to import our files. And once more I'll choose one at random, I may as well go for the first one and then click on Open and there it is, there's our thumbnail. And therefore once I double-click on the thumbnail view there, it gets added to my timeline. And of course I can see it in my main project window and it completely matches the project settings as requested.
