Introduction / Welcome
Subtitles of the Movie
I'm Mike Jang and I'll be your guide through the VTC course on the Red Hat certified technician exam. In this video you'll learn about the skills you need to pass the RHCT exam. If you don't have enough experience you may have to practice between tutorials. If you're new to Linux this course will not be enough. Red Hat suggests you need years of practical experience in heterogeneous network computing environments. We do not use brain dumps in this course. What we use is based on the publicly available RHCT prep guide as well as the outline for the Red Hat prep course for this exam, RH133. Navigate to the RHCT course outline. You can see it for yourself at the URL shown here. You'll notice that the lessons in the VTC videos follow the course outline pretty closely. Now navigate to the RHCT exam prep guide which you can review for yourself at the URL shown here. As you can see from the URL address it say RHCE, that's not a mistake the prep [00:01:24 ] guide includes requirements for both RHCT and Red Hat certified engineer exams. This makes sense as the RHCT is a subset of the RHCE. In other words, everything you do to study for the RHCT exam can help you pass the RHCE exam. Now let's review some mechanics. As you can see in the exam prep guide there are two sections in the RHCT exam, troubleshooting and system maintenance. You get one hour on this section to solve several difficult problems and you'll need to solve all five problems to pass this section. Installation and configuration, you have to install and configure Red Hat Enterprise Linux with a certain set of requirements in two hours in this section and you need a score of 70 percent to pass this section. Naturally you need to pass both sections to qualify as a RHCT. I emphasize Red Hat Enterprise Linux as this exam uses the Red Hat distribution of the Linux operating system. Red Hat includes its own special tools and locates key files in specific directories. Red Hat defaults within configuration files often differ from other Linux distributions. The current RHCT exam is based on the client version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, formally known as Red Hat Enterprise Linux Workstation. If you do not want to pay for a full subscription, of course you can always purchase RHEL5 client. Trial subscriptions may be available which provide updates and a limited amount of support for thirty days. The alternative I prefer in many cases is those provided by rebuild distributions. But what's a rebuild? It's available because Red Hat Enterprise Linux is open source; it uses the source rpms released by Red hat under the Linux general public license. It's rebuilt by third parties such as Centos in scientific Linux into a fully functional rebuild distribution of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. It includes all the tools available on Red Hat Enterprise Linux. It has configuration files with defaults in the same locations Red Hat Enterprise Linux. In other words it's functionally identical except for the trademarks. Thanks and on to the next video.
