Installing Linux / Partition Options

Subtitles of the Movie

Now that you've taken the first steps towards installation we continue our videos with the steps associated with partitioning during the installation process. After you've connected to the network installation server using text mode you'll see a welcome stream. The steps are basically the same but not identical if you're installing in graphical mode, press the spacebar to accept OK to continue. You may have an installation number associated with your subscription, enter it if you do. It'll provide a set of defaults and access to appropriate repositories such as those associated with virtualization and others associated with your subscription. We'll skip this process now for many of you won't have a subscription to the Red Hat Network. I press ok, accept the option to skip and the installation program searches for existing installation, if it doesn't find one you won't see this screen but if you do you have an existing installation of Red Hat Enterprise Linux. For the purpose of this video I choose reinstall system to go through the different steps of the installation process. Now under the partitioning type screen make sure an appropriate local drive or drives are selected. The basic options of this step are self explanatory. I could remove all partitions, including any partitions associated with other operating systems, I could remove just the Linux partitions. I could use any free space that's available or remove nothing and create a custom layout. For the purpose of this tutorial let's remove all partitions. I use all existing drives, I click ok. I confirm that I want to make the changes and I do want to review and modify the partitioning layout. This takes me to the disc druid screen. The default layout includes two logical volume groups, one for the top level root file system, another for the swamp volume. There's also a partition dedicated to the boot file system. On your exam, if you're required to create a custom set of partitions you may want to delete the logical volumes and start again. As you may see in the Red Hat exam prep guide logical volumes are part of only the RHCE exam prep requirements. So for the purpose of following videos delete all current volumes and partitions. As you can see from the screen I can delete by pressing F4, I confirm the deletion and repeat the process as needed. See how easy that was, now that we've deleted all partitions it's on to the next video.
