Once you get through the troubleshooting and maintenance part, then there's installation and configuration. While the time is not split, you get a total of three hours for RHCT and RHCE requirements. The RHCT part gives you a chance to demonstrate most or all of the following skills. Of course, you'll be expected to install Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 over a network. You'll be told to implement a custom partitioning scheme, which should be done during the installation process. You need to know how to configure printing as well as the scheduling of tasks using daemons like Chron and AT. As a client, you need to know how to attach a client system to a network directory service such as NIS, the Network Information Service, or LDAP, the Lightweight Directory of Access Protocol. It should be easy for you to configure Autofs for automated mounting. You need to know how to add and manage users groups, quotas, as well as file access control lists. Of course, you should know how to configure file system permissions, say on shared directories for collaboration. A basic skill is knowing how to install and update packages using the rpm command as well as how to properly update the kernel package. You need to know how to configure the system to update and install packages from remote repositories using the yum command or a utility like PUP. Of course, you should know how to modify the system bootloader, GRUB, the Grand Unified Bootloader. As an RHCT, or an RHCE, you know how to implement software raid during the installation process and afterwards. You need to know how to use files in the procsys directory, as well as the syscontrol command to modify and set kernel and rom time parameters. Finally you need to know how to use scripting to automate system maintenance tasks, and these are all RHCT tasks, all discussed in VTC's course for the RHCT exam, and you need to know all these for the RHCE exam as well. Of course, there are the RHCE qualifications. A qualified RHCE must know how to configure any and all of the following network services. HTTP and the secure version of HTTP, usually associated with the Apache Web service. SMB, associated with the Samba Filesharing Service, NFS, the Network File Service, FTP, usually configured with the various secure ftp's daemon, the Web Proxy Service for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 is Squid. SMTP may be implemented using sendmail or Postfix, IMAP, the secure version of IMAP, and POP3 are usually implemented with the Dovecot service. The Secure Shell Service should be well known, and remember, in the exam prep guide, DNS should be configurable by RHCEs just for caching or slave name servers. You don't need to know how to configure a master DNS server for the RHCE exam. Finally, there is the NTP or Network Time Protocol Service. For all of these services, a qualified RHCE must be able to install the packages needed to provide the service, how to configure Security Enhanced Linux to support the service. You need to make sure the service is started when the system is booted, otherwise how do you expect the grader to give you credit for your work? Of course, you need to know how to configure each of these services for basic operation along with user- and host-based security for each of these services. Beyond NETwork services, you need to configure hands-free installations using the Kickstart service. Of course, you should know how to implement logical volumes during the installation process, as well as how to configure firewalls for packet filtering, as well as the iptables command for network address translation, NAT for short. Finally, there are pluggable authentication modules, PAM for short, which you can use to configure user level restrictions. There are about eight hours of movies associated with this course. In contrast, Red Hat's RH253 course includes about 32 hours of instruction, and yes, Red Hat instructors are quite excellent, but the cost of RH253 is about $2500. Not everybody has that kind of money. I believe with some Linux experience you can use this course as well as VTC's companion course on the RHCT Exam with some self-study to pass the RHCE Exam. Thank you for listening. Good luck.
