In this video we preview the concepts we see in other videos in this chapter dedicated to network resource access control. Dynamic IP addressing means you don't have to remember a bunch of ip addresses as they're assigned automatically during the boot process. It also helps ration addresses if there are more systems than ip addresses available. The HCP server can also assign other ip address-related items, everything from the ip address of DNS servers and NTP servers and more, to host names, but some systems are better suited for static addressing. Other systems on the LAN need immediate access to certain systems, such as DNS servers. If you remember your resolve dot conf configuration file, DNS servers are listed there by their ip address. Routing configuration. Routing works only if it's configured through the right kernel setting in the proc directory, and the right forwarding information in the routing table. You can verify your current routing table with the route -n command. Netfiltering and Firewalls. Firewalls, as defined by the ip tables command, filters network packets. Iptables rules may seem complex. The current list of rules is available when you run the iptables -L command, that's capital "L" for list. Ooo. That does seem like a lot of rules. But all you really have to do is examine the rules one at a time. And the default iptables rules are available in the etc slash sysconfig iptables configuration file. Connection Tracking. It lists the current state of ip connections and they are described and listed in the proc slash net slash ip underscore conntrack configuration file. Network Address Translation. It enables Masquerading, and that allows your system to hide private ip addresses of systems inside your local network, protecting those systems from possible hacking, or cracking, depending on your definitions. Network Address Translation is normally enabled in the router. It can be a Linux router, or even a home hardware router.
