This video serves mostly as a review of account management. Part of the information is available in VTC's course or the RHCT Exam, Basic Account Management. Local accounts include user names and passwords. If you use the default shadow password suite this information can be found in the etc slash passwd, etc slash shadow, etc slash group, and etc slash gshadow configuration files. These accounts include default shells such as bin slash bash. User and group ID numbers, and often, personal information. They also include home directories and etc slash group also includes group memberships. But you can configure more than just local accounts. There are also several networkable account or authentication databases available. Network authentication databases can include the same information as available in a local database, as I've just described, and more. The original network standard for Linux in the Enterprise for an authentication database is NIS, the Network Information Service. It's configured in etc slash ypserv dot conf for the server, and etc slash yp dot conf for the client. It can also include common files such as etc slash hosts. In other words, if you have a smaller network and choose not to configure a DNS server, you can set up NIS, which will give you a consistent set of etc slash hosts configuration files throughout your network. One common alternative for Linux authentication databases is the LDAP system. LDAP stands for the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol. As described in the Red Hat Exam Prep Guide, you do need to know how to configure a workstation as an NIS, and as an LDAP client. There is no mention in the Exam Prep Guide about configuring NIS or LDAP servers, so we don't cover that subject in this course. For more information on configuring a workstation as an NIS and as an LDAP client, see the VTC course for the RHCT Exam.
