I have always been a huge advocate of having a solid plan before starting up with any new accounting system. It is really important to understand that how you develop your initiating system is the foundation for your program. You'll be using this for many years to come, so it's a good idea to have a good start-up plan. First, start with four basic account types: your checking, savings, credit card, and cash. Think in terms of putting in your primary accounts first. Leave your secondary accounts for later on. I'll start with my main checking account where the bulk of my income and expenses occur. After I'm happy with the setup and comfortable with the bank reconciliations, then I'll go through and set up my secondary accounts. There are also some phases that you can follow. You'll note that in phase one, we're going to keep it simple. I'll start by using the Express Online Setup, enter basic transactions; do some transferring; and, some tracking of income expenses. I'll master the basics, and then I'll move on to phase two. Phase two will now allow me to add my investment accounts. I'll think about manual entry of some accounts, and I'll go into the more complex tasks of multiple categories, going online, and expanding my expertise. Finally, phase three is where I'll really start my planning and my tracking. I'll think about setting up a business if I have a business. I'll look at how I'm doing against a budget. Here's where the monitoring of my performance comes into play, and here's where I'll start thinking about exporting data for taxes, and really thinking of how I'm doing on the progress. I have included this particular slide show in the work files. I recommend that you print it out and use it as a guide for establishing your expertise in Quicken. Remember, the foundation is the most important aspect of your accounting system.
