Subtitles of the Movie

Along with entering a transaction within the register as a typical line item, I can also use a Dialog Screen to enter the transaction. I am back at the Portfolio Screen of the Investing Tab. I'm going to again open the Accounts Bar and go down to Investing, particularly for Stocks and Company. Again, I'm going to close off the Accounts Bar. Now, you'll notice that there is an Enter Transactions right on top. In our last movie, I showed you how we could simply go column by column to enter the information. If you prefer, you can simply select the Enter Transactions button. When you select it, you'll be brought to the dialog box that asks you to enter the Transaction Style. These are exactly the same items that we had in our column. The only thing you'll notice, it's a little bit easier to read as there's more space. Also, note, the most commonly used transactions have shortcut keys attached to them. It's not a bad idea to take note of these particular shortcut keys when you use them from day to day. I'm going to once again buy shares and it comes up as Shares Bought. Once again, I'll choose my transaction date. It will automatically use the account that I chose within the Account Bar. Now I can go in and select my security from the list. Now, you'll note, if you forgot to add your security in the proceeding Portfolio Screen, it gives us the opportunity to add it right here. I'm going to say Coca-Cola will be what we'll purchase. I'll put in the number of shares, again, go in and price out my shares. If there's any commission involved, I'll say I do have a 15 dollar commission charge and I have the total cost of the shares. This will be the cost basis that I'll use for tax purposes. On the bottom of the screen you will note it's going to ask you from what account will the cash balance come? Remember, the intent is that you will be taking funds from one account to purchase these shares. I was in the Checking Account as my default. If I'm not sure of the account it's coming from I can select From instead and be clear on the exact account that I'm in. I would always recommend using the From button so that you are aware of the account the transaction will occur in. When I'm finished, I'll enter it as a New Purchase. When I'm finished, I can hit done. Now, you'll notice in this case, I hit Enter New and it immediately came up that the field must not be left blank. When I say OK, because I entered and went to a new screen, I will then have to cancel out. If I am finished and want the dialog box to close, I'll have to hit Enter and Done. This could be a little frustrating in the beginning until you get the hang of it. But just always remember; if you accidentally select Enter New, just hit Cancel and that will take you back to your Transaction Screen. You'll notice again on the top I can return to the Investing Center where I will now see that my Stocks and Company have Coca-Cola entered. When I click on the Plus sign, I'll see the lot that I just entered and purchased today.
