Introduction / Choosing a Version

Subtitles of the Movie

Now that we know that Quicken is correct for us, it's time to determine which version is the correct version to use. Quicken comes with a number of versions; Home and Business, Premier, Deluxe and Starter. Let's talk about each one in detail. First, for people who are comingling business expenses and personal finances, Home and Business is the correct edition. Now, Home and Business is an all-in-one financial management tool that incorporates all of the features of Quicken. Home and Business has everything that is contained under Premier, Deluxe and Starter. If you have a business that you are just starting, if you're considering a business in the future or you would like to see items in a more detailed environment, Home and Business would be the correct choice. If, however, your main objective is to track your investment portfolio, you may wish to consider the Premier Edition. Now, the Premier Edition is all about managing your investments. It will show you all of your stocks; it will even update them to the current market value. An absolutely wonderful aspect of Premier is that it'll automatically download all of the current values directly into Quicken. Once it's set up, it's just a matter of reviewing your accounts to see exactly what your net worth is. If your objective is in getting a good savings plan going, then Deluxe is for you. Deluxe concentrates on tracking where your money is going to and where your money's coming from. Its objective is to allow you to set a budget to cut back on your spending so that you can really maximize your savings. Its goal is to be able to fund your retirement account, to send your kids to college or to plan a family vacation. The Starter Edition was geared for those who have never used an accounting program before. If you're new to personal finances or if you're new to a computer, you may want to consider the Starter Edition. The Starter Edition has simplified all of the features and limited the options that you have. Its idea is to get you started with tracking your spending. Although it has fewer features, it'll make you very comfortable with using financial software if this is a new arena for you. Only you can determine which version of Quicken is correct for you. If you go to Quicken.com, they'll compare each of these editions and help you make your decision so that you're comfortable with your choice. Now, there's one other edition that I'd like to note and that is Quicken Online. For those of you that are comfortable storing your information online, this is another option. As with the Starter Edition, Quicken Online is limited in what you can do. Keep in mind also that the Online Edition stores your data on another server. Your data is not stored on your machine. You'll need to be comfortable with this feature. It does, however, allow you to track where you're spending your money, see when your bills are due and see how much money you really have. If you need to access your books from multiple locations, you may wish to consider Quicken Online. Please keep in mind also as you go through the movies that some of the features we'll talk about are only available in the other editions and are not included with Quicken Online. Take your time to do a comparison and find the version that's the best fit for you.
