Quicken 2008 Tutorials

Getting Started / Creating a File with the Guided Setup

Subtitles of the Movie

As we noted in our last movie, that when installing Quicken we will be asked whether or not we'd like a guided tour. If you are upgrading from an older version your books will already be established so there won't be a need to go through the guided setup. However, if you are brand new to Quicken, the guided setup will help you know exactly what's necessary to get up and running in Quicken. Please keep in mind that Quicken will be asking you questions on how you'll want your books actually established. This means you're going to need to know what accounts that you want to put into Quicken. You'll see right on the first screen it's going to ask us for our recent bank statements. It's also going to ask us for a list of monthly bills. Now, one of my favorite ways of working with software is to always go through these examples first in a play company. I'll set up a company and call it Sample, go through each of the steps so that I gain the confidence in setting up my own bills. You may want to do the same thing. Find all your bills, find all your accounts, set up a play company, be comfortable on how you want to establish all the accounts for bill paying and then go into establishing your books. Let's take you through the setup and see the questions that are going to come up on the screen. First, on our very first screen it's going to ask me what my name is. Now, I'd like you to keep in mind that as you fill in this information we will be able to correct any of it inside of Quicken so you don't have to worry about getting this absolutely correct. The questions on the bottom are designed to show you what areas of Quicken will need to be filled in based on whether you own a home, rental property, or a business. When I go to the next step, it's now going to ask me to confirm the information that it's asking for. First a business. If you have a business, simply hit Add and I'm going to just call mine My Business. You can put in a description to determine whether you are the owner, or the spouse, and then you can put a tag. Now, a tag will allow us to set up transactions that automatically go to the business side rather than the personal side. In this case, I'm just going to go in and call my tag the same thing: My Business. We'll be talking about tags in detail in an upcoming movie. When I say OK, my business is set up. Now I'm off to the next step. What bank do I hold my account at? Here we will simply put in whichever bank account that we use. Now you'll notice that Quicken will have just about every bank out there, but if yours isn't, you can still put it in. You will note off to the side it'll give you help on What if my bank isn't listed? I'm going to simply choose the very first account that came up. I'm going to our next step. Now it wants to know What name is on the account. Now, I'm choosing a fictitious account for this demonstration, so I'm just going to go in and say it's L. Matsen. It asks you for your statement ending date and the balance on your date. When I choose my statement ending date I'll go to the calendar, simply select the date that I'm going to be ending my books on, go to the next step and I'm ready to continue. At this point you'll notice it's going to ask if you want to add your deposits and other income. We'll I'm not ready for this information. I just want to get the books settled, so I'm going to go to the next step. Each of these screens will ask you for information, but you do not have to track this at this moment. You don't have all the information, just go to the next step. You'll notice it's asking you to set up your credit cards. If you know your credit card name, it's good to put it in. Let's say, for instance, that I have a MasterCard. Now, normally, you would put in the name of the bank in the MasterCard as we may have more than one MasterCard. For this example, though I just want to show you that I put in my MasterCard. Multiple cards? Simply add a row. I have MasterCard, now I'm going to go ahead and put in Visa. I would continue this step for each of my credit cards. I can do the same thing for bill reminders. If I know that an electronic transfer goes out from my mortgage each month I can choose to set it up right here. Now, please keep in mind that each one of these items can also be set up once we're in Quicken. It is not necessary to look all that information up at the moment. This is just part of what the easy setup guide is going to ask you. Let's go to the next step. I have a few accounts, I don't want any deposits, I have a couple of credit cards. It's confirming the information and allowing me to delete it if it's an error. Next step it tells me Congratulations! Now, you'll note that it's showing me the screen and it's showing me exactly where I can add my accounts and exactly where I can learn about things. When I finish it takes me directly to my screen and right here you'll notice the Add Account. On my screen, if I go up to the top you'll notice I have Support and the question mark in the circle is my Help screen.
