Getting Started / Installation

Subtitles of the Movie

Although the installation process for Quicken 2008 is very straightforward, I would like to address some installation concerns and I have some special notes on installing for Microsoft Vista, and online. The first thing that I'd like you to be aware of is that no other application should be running when you install this program. This is true of any new installation. Insure that you're e-mail programs, anti-virus software, and any spam-ware or other information is actually turned off. Next, you will be installing Quicken either with a CD, DVD, or online. Please make sure that you look at what type of media is in the copy that you have purchased. Frequently we are seeing software on DVDs rather than CDs. Make sure that you have a DVD drive on your machine if this is the case. If you are installing online, you will have downloaded an installation file. You will need to find that installation file to start the actual installation. It is always recommended that you download the file first and install second. With any online applications it's always easier and safer to save the file to your machine and then complete the installation. That way, if something goes wrong; there's a power outage, or you lose your Internet connection, you haven't stopped in the middle of the installation process itself. You will also need to be aware of the fact that Quicken will uninstall your previous version. Your old data will automatically be converted and it will then store a backup copy in the directory Program Files, Quicken Data. If something goes wrong, which is very, very rare, you may need to get back to your old files. To do this, you'll need to reinstall your older version to get back to your old data. More times than not, though, you'll never have to worry about this, but do take note of where it's going to file your old data. When you go into the program you will also be given a choice of whether you want a guided or a non-guided setup. We will be going through the guided tour in our next movie. If you are new to Quicken I'd recommend that you begin the guided setup. If, however, you are an intermediate to advanced user, you're aware of what to do with Quicken, you may wish to skip the guided setup. This is particularly true if you are upgrading to a new version. Now let's take a moment to talk about Microsoft Vista. In Microsoft Vista you must have administrative rights in order to install the program. In the case of downloading, you must run as administrator. Now, please be very cautious here. If you are used to logging in automatically you may not be running as an administrator. You will need to find out who the administrator on your machine is, and what that password is. If you're unsure, you may wish to contact a local company to help you determine how to find this information out in Microsoft Vista. Keep in mind that going to Vista Help and typing into Administrator may also give you some information. I'd also like you to be aware of the fact that in Microsoft Vista, Quicken has a tool that is called the Bill Minder Gadget. Now, this is only available with Microsoft Vista. If you are currently running Microsoft XP or ME, this is not available. The gadget will load automatically on your Desktop and you will note that it allows you to see a calendar view or a list view on your payments that need to be made, upcoming transactions, and even overdue bills. You'll never be late with a payment again with the Gadget. We'll talk in great detail about the Gadget later in this series. Make sure you read the information on the installation components first, find your administrator, know your password, and then you're ready to begin. For the most part it will be completely smooth sailing and there'll be no concerns whatsoever.
