When using the Category list, especially when taking part of Sub-categories, it's very possible to have the list get totally away from you. I'm going to open my Category list by going to Tools and down to the Category list. I'm simply going to move it over to the center of the screen and I'll use the Center button to center it accordingly. You'll note that I have quite a few different Categories. Even if I go to Personal Expenses you'll notice that there are quite a few auto categories. I'm thinking it's time to clean this list up and merge some of these together. Now, the first thing I'd like to point out is that if a Category is empty you can hit the Delete key and it'll allow you to delete it. It does warn you that you are about to permanently delete the category, and if there are sub-categories associated they will be deleted as well. When I say OK, the category is gone. If I go to the Loan Category and hit Delete on this category you will notice that I get the same message. When I say OK, the Category did not delete out; instead, Quicken is protecting itself. It notes that there are going to be transactions within the Loan Account and instead of deleting that Category it needs to move those transactions first, so what it's asking on the bottom is Where would you like to put them if you're going to delete them? Now, in this instance I'd like to go to the pull-down and I'm going to go directly toward the bottom to Auto. I'll select Auto, say OK, and now my Loan Category is gone, but they've actually been put into Auto. The nice part of working with the transactions in Quicken is it will try to protect you. We are not allowed to delete a category unless no information is contained within that category. When we'd like to move a category, we can simply merge it at any time with another area. I'm selecting the Merge button, and you will notice with the Fuel Account it automatically brought me to the Merge Category. I knew there was information in this category, so I didn't even try to delete it. Once again, I can simply choose the account that I want it to merge with and say OK. If I'd like to permanently delete the category Fuel, I can simply put a check mark next to Delete the Category, and say OK. It will merge and delete all in one motion. Now, you'll notice it's taking a fair share of time in this particular instance to merge those categories together. When you have a lot of information in the background there will be a pause on your screen. It will look as if nothing's happening, it'll look as if there's a problem, but there really isn't. Quicken is actually merging the information in the background. In many instances the actual memory on the machine is going to be a little bit too slow to keep up with the pace. You'll notice that as the process keeps going my screen is slowly building itself back. This is an indicator that there were a tremendous amount of transactions in the background that Quicken had to go through. Do not let it disturb you. When the machine is finished and you hit Done, it'll take you back to your first screen and everything will be fine. Keep in mind that Quicken has a great deal of graphics involved in its screen. Each time we go between a Tab we have even more graphics that load. As a result it's common to see a little jumpiness and it's common to see the slowness when we're creating different merges. The more data that you have, the slower the process, so always be patient.
