The ability to be able to download our transactions from our credit card companies is an amazing feature of Quicken. This can save a great deal of time in actually manually typing in the transactions. There are, however, a few things that I'd like to point out. First, the feature is automated. Once you set up your online transactions, you will note that Quicken will bring the information in automatically. It'll constantly check with your credit card company to make sure that there are transactions to be uploaded into Quicken. On the bottom of the screen you'll notice an area that says Download Transactions. I have the ability to accept the transactions into the register. There are a few things that I would like to point out, however. First, when we bring in a transaction, the naming that is given to it by the bank is not always logical. For instance, do you notice how I have Auto Pay and it's followed by a series of numbers? This will not do any good for me on my bank account listing as it has no meaning. On the bottom of the screen, however, I have the ability to rename it. I can tell the bank that anything with an Auto Pay starting with the letter eight should be, for instance, my mortgage payment. Number two; when you are looking for your downloaded transactions, you will need to get to the tab that says Download Transactions. It is not, however, available in all views. For instance, I'm going to go to the Word View and go to the Full Register View. At this point you'll notice I have no Download Transactions. Now normally we can go to the Options button and we'll have the ability to show the Downloaded Tab, but you noticed it's ghosted out. That's because it's not available in the Full Register View. If I go to View, remove the checkmark from Full Register and go to a Partial, you'll notice that the Download Transactions appears at the bottom of the screen. Also, when I go to Options now, you'll notice that I have the ability to hide that tab. When I'm not in a Full Register, I can hide and simply unhide the tab so I can work with the information on the screen. Once you've pulled the information in, you can do everything you can in a normal register. You can change it; you can do your reconciliation. There is no disadvantages of pulling it in from the Online Services. So what if you have a credit card account and you are not established for online? Let's go to our Account Bar and I'm going to select another credit card. When I select another credit card, you'll notice that there is a button for Set Up Download. At this time I'm going to be asked for a customer ID and a password. Note that it'll automatically give me information on American Express so that I can contact them for any information. Every merchant is different in the procedures necessary for establishing the connection to Quicken. What I would like you to be aware of though is that Quicken will give us the information necessary to contact the merchant. I'm going to a new credit card. Notice that I'm set up. I can tell because I go directly to Download Transactions. If, however, I go to simply credit card, you'll notice again Set Up Download. I'll select Set Up Download and once again you'll notice that I'm being brought to the screen for the information and you'll notice again that the American Express information is clearly visible for contact. It is very important to review the information from your financial institution before working with online. Charges vary and setup procedures vary also. Additionally, it is absolutely essential that you are running an anti-virus program, an anti-spy program and a spam program so that you are properly secured on your computer. We'll be discussing these in length in our chapter on the Internet.
