Customizing Your Screen / Other Items for Customization

Subtitles of the Movie

We've been talking about some of the ways that we can customize QuickBooks via the home page and the icon bar. Let's summarize a number of the little tricks that are involved in the background and see how we can put this to use for us. For instance, I do like to use my icon bar and don't necessarily need the home page. In this instance, I'll go to the word edit and go down to preferences. It is under my desktop view that I'll notice right in the center of the screen that it asks if I want to show the home page on opening the file. I'm going to remove the checkmark. I also do not use the coach. Remember, do keep this one when you're starting out. It's a great section of tips and tricks, but for now I'm going to go ahead and remove this. I'm happy. I'm going to go ahead and say ok, and now you notice that the coach disappeared right away. The next time I open up QuickBooks, I will not have my home page. It will open up to a blank screen. Remember in this instance, I can very quickly get to any area that I want to by using an item from my actual icon bar or I can use the menu system. Now, when utilizing this system, I can also do a little customization on the screen itself. For instance, you notice that the check came up as a partial screen. I can simply go to my center restore and that'll pop that to a full screen. When you are on the particular forms, one nice feature that we can work with is these columns can be rearranged. Notice how I just made my account column very large. Now, I'm going to go ahead and close it back up again. Let's close out of our check window and do the same thing in our item list. Notice on my icon bar I have my item list. Of course I could go to list and go to my item list that way also. Once again, a partial screen. I'm going to go ahead and open to a full screen. Now, here's where these columns come in handy. You notice that I can close off my description and it's opened up my account menu. Also note that whenever you see a name at the top of a column, if there is a triangle there, that'll allow you a fast sort. If I'd like to get all of my accounts in one grouping, I simply select account and it'll go between our ascending and descending order. If I prefer to look for something in description, I'll do the same thing in my description column or my type column or even my pricing column. Once again, we'll close out of QuickBooks. When I'm on our menu system, do remember that we talked in terms of the keyboard shortcuts. It's very easy to simply do control A to get to my chart of accounts rather than clicking from the menu system itself. In each instance, I can very quickly design the screen the way that I wish to. Under your view menu, we also talked in terms of having one window at a time open or having multiple windows at a time. This is for your ease of use again. So think in terms of what's going to be most comfortable for you. Also think in terms of the performance of your computer. Newer machines can handle a number of screens open at one time. Our older machines sometimes prefer to have one screen at a time, as there is a drain on the memory of your equipment. So keep that in mind. If QuickBooks seems like it's going a little slow, go ahead and go up to your view menu, try it on one window for a time and see if that makes a difference to your working experience. Remember also in working with the windows that on the top of our screen we have the button that says open window list. This'll allow me to see the number of windows that are open. So take a few moments, get a feel for how you like to work with QuickBooks and then establish your screen for your convenience. Remember, this is a number of varieties of methods that I can work with from the vendor center to the home page to my icon list. The trick is to set it up for what's going to be most comfortable for you.
