Setting Shared Content Preferences. Most tasks within QuarkXPress 8 have a Company and Preference Settings. This is how you define your preferred method of interaction with the features, tools and application. In most cases Preferences are exactly that, the preferred method, but you may override the preference with a local setting. In other cases preferences can only be overridden by returning to the Preferences Dialog Box and changing the settings. In this movie I will show you how to set the Preferences for Shared Content. The first thing you need to keep in mind about Preferences is that when you set the Preferences without an open project you're defining the behavior for all new projects that you create. You're not changing the settings for existing projects that you may open after you have changed these settings. To change the preferences of an existing project open the project and define the settings. Let's get started by launching the Preferences Dialog Box. On a Mac go to the QuarkXPress Menu and choose Preferences. If you're on a Windows PC go to the Edit Menu and choose Preferences. The Preferences Dialog Box is divided into logical sections, application, project, print layout, interactive layout and web layout. Shared Content is stored in the Shared Content Library, when you drag an item from the Shared Content Palette onto the page you're making a duplicate of the Master Item. When changes are made to the item you've dragged or any duplicate of the Master the changes are written to the Master and all iterations are updated. With Shared Content you can synchronize the box attributes, the content end attributes or just the content. The settings here in the Sharing Pane of the Preferences Dialog Box enable you to set the default of what will be synchronized, but like most preferences you're only setting the default choices and you may change your mind at any time. Use these radio buttons to choose the default and click OK when done. Shared Content is a great way to ensure consistency through out your projects and can be especially helpful if you're using multiple layouts that contain the same content as you might if you're working on a multiple part campaign that includes print, web and interactive components. Using Composition Zones, another form of Shared Content you can collaborate not just across projects but even with other users. For more information on Shared Content turn to the movie describing the Shared Content Palette in this video tutorial. You'll find additional information on the video on Composition Zones also in this Video Tutorial.
