Managing Pages. Managing pages is much like managing layouts. In this video I will cover how to manage pages as well as working with various view sizes. Let's get started by first creating a project so that we have pages to work with. When you create a new project and or layout, your first page is added for you automatically. You defined the page dimensions and margins in the New Project or New Layout Dialog Boxes. Like layouts, pages have a dedicated menu for inserting, moving and deleting pages. Unlike layouts, there's also a dedicated palette for navigating pages added within a layout. We won't cover the palette here since this video tutorial includes a section that covers the palettes in depth. So assuming that we don't know there's a palette for navigation, let's look at what's left. Let's start by adding pages to our layout so we actually have somewhere to go. From the Page Menu, choose Insert. In the resulting Insert Pages Dialog Box, choose Before Page, After Page or At End of Layout. When you choose Before Page or After Page, you also need to type a page number in the field provided. Since I only have one page in this layout, I will add nine pages after page one. The last two options here are for master pages and we're not quite ready to jump into that. We'll cover these in the master pages section of this video tutorial. Click OK to add the pages. I now have ten pages in my layout. The next option in the Page Menu is Delete. Simply enough, choose it and you get the Delete Pages Dialog Box. You may delete one page or a range of pages. Type in the desired pages and click OK. Also in the Page Menu is Move. Use this to move a single page or a range of pages to somewhere else in the lineup. In the first field, type the starting page number. In the second field, type the ending page number. Then from the radio buttons, choose if you want the pages moved to before or after a page number and then specify the page number or to the end of the layout. Click OK. I'll leave Master Guides and Grid and Section to the Master Page topic of this video tutorial and skip right ahead to Previous, Next, First, Last and Go To. Use each of these to navigate to the specified page or use Go To to prompt the Go To Dialog Box and type in a page number. Click OK. In the lower, left-hand corner of the project window there are interactive fields and buttons. The first field is the View Size Field. This is actually a layout setting since it changes the view size of all pages within the layout. In this field you can type a view size and the layout will rescale. You may also change the view size in the view menu but it's not interactive. There are, however, a number of predefined choices that you may select which may be faster than typing in a frequently-used value. Alternatively, you could use the keyboard shortcut, like Command 0 on a Mac or Control 0 on Windows to fit the page size in the window. If that weren't enough, you could also use the Zoom Tool over here in the Tools Palette. We'll come back to that one later when we dig into the Tools Palette in this video tutorial. The next field is the interactive page number field. This field will display the current page number but you may also type a page number here to quickly move to that page. To the right of the interactive page number field is the page navigation pop-up. When you click this arrow, icons appear to represent every page within your layout. If you mouse over a page and release, you will be instantly transported to that page. The icons are actually little thumbnail representations of my layout pages that enable me to visually navigate to the desired page. If you need larger thumbnail images, press the Up Arrow Key on your keyboard. Smaller; press the Down Arrow Button. If you keep pressing the Down Arrow, the thumbnails will be replaced by page icons. To the right of the page navigation buttons are the Previous and Next Page Buttons. These work exactly as their counterparts in the Page Menu. The next button is the Master Page Toggle Button and this is best left to the master page topic so we'll skip over that and go to the Split View, Horizontal and Split View Vertical Buttons. Click these buttons and the current active page is represented in two windows. This is very useful when you want to zoom in for detail work but keep an eye on the big picture. When you're done, click the Close Button to dismiss the extra views. Split views are often of the same page but what if you need a view of a different page in your layout? Or maybe a different layout? Maybe you're keeping an eye on shared content. Use the Window Menu and choose New Window. Then choose Window, Tile. Use one window to zoom in and edit page one and the lower window to show the entire page two and three spread for instance. If you use stack, you'll have a larger page view but you'll need to click on the various windows to bring them to the front. We've covered a lot of ground in this section but now you should be able to easily navigate your pages and manage views. Remember, there's more on this topic in the master pages section of this video tutorial.
