Setting Guides and Units. Part 2. In Part 1 of this movie I showed you how to set your ruler increments, show and hide rulers and turn on and off the snap-to features. Now let's work with fine tuning our guides. Let's get started. If you're having trouble getting the precise measurement, you can drop the guideline anywhere you like and then click on the line. You may need to double if the line is in front of an object. If you do not have the Item Tools selected, hold down your Command Key on a Mac or Control Key on Windows and click the line to prompt the guide attributes dialog box. In the first field, type the value for this guideline. You can also change the direction of a guideline by clicking the opposite direction radio button. I dragged this line over my page area and this is indicated by this radio button, but I can change that to a guideline that spans the spread and paste board by clicking this radio button. The Preview Button enables you to watch the results as you make changes. From the Color Drop-Down Menu you can change the color or define a new color for this guideline. The View Scale enables you to set the threshold for when this guideline becomes visible. This is very useful if you have a lot of guidelines for close-up precision work but they clutter the page at smaller view scales. Simply set this number to a high value, such 125 percent and the guidelines will only be visible at or above that view scale. If you tick the Locked Check Box, you will not inadvertently move or delete the guideline. To unlock it, click the line and come back to this dialog box and tick the Locked Check Box again. If you want to move a guideline, be sure that you have the Item Tool or hold down the Command Key on a Mac or Control Key on Windows and click and hold down on the line until you see this icon. Now drag the line to the new position and release. If you want to delete a single guideline, click on it and drag it back to the ruler. If you want to delete all horizontal page guidelines, make sure the page area is touching the top ruler and Option Click on the ruler if using a Mac and Control Click if using Windows. If you want to delete all vertical page guidelines, make sure the page area is touching the left ruler and Option Click on the ruler when using a Mac or Control Click when using Windows. If you want to delete all horizontal spread guides, makes sure the paste board area is touching the top ruler and Option Click on the ruler when using a Mac or Control Click for Windows. If you want to delete all vertical spread guides, make sure the past board is touching the left ruler and Option Click on the ruler when using a Mac or Control Click for Windows. Now that I have guidelines, I can easily use them to draw and align items on my page. For more information on guidelines, turn to the movie in this video tutorial on the Guides Palette.
