Setting Master and Guide Preferences. Most tasks within QuarkXPress 8 have accompanying preference settings. This is how you define your preferred method of interaction with the features, tools and application. In most cases, preferences are exactly that; the preferred method. But you may override the preferences with a local setting. In other cases, preferences can only be overridden by returning to the Preferences Dialog Box and changing the settings. In this movie I will show you how to set the preferences of master pages and guides. We'll skip around a bit because the preferences that we need are scattered throughout this dialog box. The first thing to keep in mind about preferences is that when you set preferences without an open project, you are defining the behavior for all new projects that you create. You are not changing the settings for current projects that you may open after you have changes these settings. To change the preferences of an existing project, open the project, then define the settings. Let's get started by launching the Preferences Dialog Box. On a Mac, go to the QuarkXPress Menu and choose Preferences. If you're on a Windows machine, go to Edit and Preferences. The Preferences Dialog Box is divided into logical sections; application, project, print layout, interactive layout and web layout. We will focus on print layout for the purpose of this video tutorial. We'll start here at the General Pane of the Print Layout section. Master page items are elements that are placed on master pages because they are consistent across a range of pages. When a page is based on a master page, anything on that master page is on every document page that is base don the master unless you manually delete it. When you modify an item on your document page that is a master page item, what do you want to have happen if you then go back to the master page and modify or delete the item? If you have modified it locally, do you want QuarkXPress 8 to leave it as is? If so, choose Keep Changes. If you do this, the locally-modified item will no longer be a master page item. The other option is to delete your changes and create a new item or modify the item on your document page to match the new or modified item on the master page. Here is the control for where pages are automatically inserted and while this is not specific to master pages, it is where I've covered this feature in the video tutorial. From this drop-down menu, choose where pages are automatically inserted when you add text to an automatic text box that oversets the current text box. Your choices are at end of story, end of section, end of document or not at all. Next up is Guides and Grid Pane in the Print Layout Section. In QuarkXPress 8 you may assign a magnetic quality to guidelines. This means that when something gets close to a guideline, the item will be pulled to that guide and snapped to it. In this field, define how close an item should be to a guideline before that pull kicks in. Using these two color swatches, click on each to change the color of margin guides, which are defined in the New Project Dialog Box and the guide color, which are created by clicking on a ruler and dragging onto the page. There are other methods for creating margins and guides, but these are the most common. Use this radio button to define whether these should appear in front of the items you draw or behind them. In this field, define a zoom threshold for when the page grid becomes visible. Use the radio buttons to put the grid behind or in front of items and these radio buttons for behind or in front of guides. Master pages and the Guides and Grids Feature will make long document production much easier and more manageable. These preferences are designed to make the features themselves more manageable as well.
