The lock command in the item menu prevents you from inadvertently moving and resizing items. The lock column in the layers palette controls the locking of items on the layers. You can lock items on an individual layer and you can lock items on all layers but the active layer. To lock all the items on a layer click the lock column to the left of the layer's name. To unlock all the items on the layer click on the lock icon. You can also double click and in the attributes dialog box uncheck the locked box and press OK. To lock all the items on all the layers in the layers dialog box hold down the control key and navigate down to lock all layers. If you want to work on just one layer click on the lock and now all the other layers will not let you inadvertently move the items to different layers. You can still edit text in a locked text box or a locked path by using the content tool. When you create an item on a locked layer, the item remains unlocked until it is deselected.
