The midi events list provides an alternative to working with midi in the playlist. We find it in the windows menu, or by using option + equal. We use the track selector to switch tracks, and thus views of midi data on all midi tracks in our session. Let's check out the kick track. As you see the arrow conveniently follows right along with the music. Now check it out in snare view. We have our basic navigation in the midi event list, with the up or down arrows. Downward, upward and also tab to move down, and option + tab to move up. If we hold down shift, we can make selections across multiple events, upward or downward. So what's going on in these columns. As you can see we have the start and end times and then our notes, we can change all of these. Here I type in C5, and I just ran up an octave on my drum track, but we can undo that here, and we are back to C4 or snare. The snare is sitting at 1,3. I can send it to 6,4 - just type it in, hit enter and there it is. Can undo that and I am back to 1,3. And then in the options drop down menu, we have go to - type in a location and hit OK. This becomes very useful when we have many midi events. What else is up in the options drop down. Well we have several well essentially preferences, or how we want to operate, or what we would like to view, which brings us to the view filter. And the view filter looks suspiciously like a midi input filter in the midi menu. The difference here is this will just show or hide events, but hidden events still play and they are protected from edit. As you notice here, I've removed volume. Using the view filter is a great way to quickly hone in on events, or notes - by turning off the view of data that we want to protect or hide. I will turn volume back ON. So if you have something like mono after touch for instance, that contains many extraneous events that you don't want to see, but you want to protect, you just turn OFF the view. We can insert any controller here. And inserting events is very easy in the midi event list. You just choose an event, choose the location, make alterations to the event if we like, we can command + drag, scroll up and down and hit escape if we change your mind. Go back to the menu or command 'n', make some adjustments again, and you can see here we can quickly send events anywhere in the song. And for inserting notes or certain controller events, we can use our midi keyboards as well. I'll hit enter here, and I've just thrown in a snare at 4/4. But, let's undo that. So what happens when we insert an event, where there is already an event? As in the case of my placing this snare at 1/1, where there was a volume message at 1/1. But that's fine, we can have many events residing at one location. It is just that they would be grayed out until we click on them, and then we can edit them like any other event. Sometimes when you are using the midi event list, it will hide behind other windows if you click in the interface. Remember, option + equal will bring it back out. And this is the one I use the most, copying and pasting. Where I'll just shift tab down this whole block of midi data, and I hit command 'c', and I could paste that anywhere, but I will switch to my target location in a blank track and we paste it in. The midi event list gives us new perspective and control of placement of our midi events.
