Pro Tools LE Tutorials

Introduction / Training Approach

Subtitles of the Movie

[Song.] I'd like to talk about my training approach. I've organized these lessons in a way that will enable you to understand the operation of Pro Tools by repetition of subject matter. This means I will cover elements of the Pro Tools interface one at a time, and then demonstrate how those elements combine to create full scale digital audio productions with Pro Tools LE. I'll cover interface elements in an overview fashion and then in later chapters, detailed those elements. Once you have a thorough understanding of the Pro Tools LE and Digi LL1 interface, I will discuss the actual operations that take place when recording, editing and mixing in Pro Tools LE. This training approach is efficient for you because you will be able to cross-reference material covered over the entire CD. For example, if we are in the editing section of the CD, and I mention using the play list, you might have forgotten how to use the play list feature. You would simply jump back to the session elements section that covers the play list feature in detail. I will be using different musical material throughout the tutorial demonstrations. Song writing and artist's credits can be found in 'about the author' on this CD. Please keep in mind that your particular brand of music is equally attainable using Pro Tools. Whether you are producing the hardcore 4-piece Rock, Hip Hop, Neo-Soul or using synthesizers to crack the next generation of techno, I'll show you how to harness the power of this amazing digital audio workstation. I'll direct you to page numbers in the Pro Tools reference guide, or refer you to the VIP folder for additional studying of what we cover on this CD. Much of what is discussed will apply to audio media 3, endoch (?) systems and even TDM or HD systems, although I do not cover those systems directly. You will want to reference your manual for the differences in each system. I am working on a Mac and therefore, I will reference Macintosh keyboard commands. The differences in Pro Tools keyboard commands between a Mac and windows based system are important. The command key on a Mac is the control key on Windows, the option key on the Mac is the Alt key on Windows. So if I say hit command, shift+N to create a new track on Pro Tools, on a Windows system you would hit control and shift N. In the Pro Tools reference guide on page 39, the important global differences are discussed. Beyond that, I've included PDF versions of all the Pro Tools keyboard commands for both Mac and Windows based systems in the Goodies folder on the CD. Use them as a reference when you work through the CD and you will be up to speed in no time. Using reference material will be your best method for learning Pro Tools with this CD. Although this may seem basic, I'll mention it now to help you out. Always keep your reference material within reach while working on Pro Tools. Some of the things I recommend to seriously study Pro Tools are duplicate the manual, and have 2 or more copies of them at the same time to make cross references. In Adobe Acrobat, use the search feature to find information. Check out the Digi design user conference at digidesign.com. Keep a folder of text files with tips and email addresses from the DUC forums. On this CD, you are getting 8 hours of hands on training. I have included all of the Pro Tools basics, and many of the advanced operations as well. But keep in mind audio engineering is deep so use this CD as an addition to your study arsenal and I will do my best to help you.
