We use zooming in conjunction with our other editing tools, to adjust our views and to perform edits. We'll start with the basics, the horizontal zoom buttons and the vertical zoom buttons, which are separate for audio and for midi. One of the things I like about Pro Tools midi is that you could make the midi notes giant, bigger than most of the other popular midi sequencers. That can come in handy when you are doing late night editing, makes it easier on the eyes. And to make it more efficient we use the keyboard, Command bracket for horizontal zoom of all tracks. Option Command Bracket, for vertical zooming of audio tracks; Command shift bracket, for vertical expansion of midi notes. We also have our five horizontal zoom preset buttons, and these are great timesavers, to keep us away from repeated clicking on the horizontal zoom buttons. What we do is use the horizontal zoom buttons to set our view exactly how we would like it, and then we Command click the preset buttons and we store that view. We can do it on all five, so set, and Command click, and the zoom levels we choose will be dependent on the task at hand or the layout of our tracks. So I set and Command click. When I am setting my zoom presets, I like to do smaller increments between the buttons and I get the most mouse click reduction this way. Command Option Bracket, on the keyboard, and control one through five for our zoom presets, F5 for the zoom tool, click anywhere to zoom, option click to zoom to previous level, jump ahead, click, option click to zoom back, drag zoom, option click to zoom back, hold down F7 and F8 simultaneously to switch back to the smart tool, and option A will show all. So Control 4 to zoom out; Option A to show all; and Control 2 to zoom back out. Aside from just getting different views of our session, zooming is a very important editing tool. At the current view this region looks as if it is on the chorus marker, but we zoom out to see if it really is, and it is not. This is extremely important to remember, whether working with audio or midi. So now I drag over and get it right up to that line this time, and this time when we zoom in, we should be on the mark but we are not. Again the importance of zooming for accurate placement of audio and midi regions or midi notes, and to be sure we can cut the region, select and paste on our selection. So if you start hearing some sloppiness when you are working with audio or midi regions, zoom in and check to make sure that you are really on the mark. And the next one is the coolest feature ever, Control E to automatically fill window with selection, whether whole region, or selections within regions, or simple insertions. And the Control E command is the command that I use most when editing. Another reason we use zooming, is if we want to zoom in to the sample level. So I make a selection, hit Control E and F5 for the zoom tool, drag and we are at the sample level that quick. F10 for the pencil tool. Now if I had a click, I could quickly eliminate the click using pencil tool, and then press F5 to switch back to the zoom tool, and option click to zoom to previous level, and Control E to zoom back out. So it took us a few seconds to go from a full session view to the sample level, and back. Or say we want to set a fade - choose F7, for the selector, we make a selection on the end of our region, Control E and shift to adjust the bounds of our selection, Command F to set a fade, and Control E and we are back to our full session view.
