Poser 8 Tutorials

The Interface / Preferences

Subtitles of the Movie

As you can see I went into the Animal Folder inside of Poser to pull out a bear and he's going to help me to explain to you guys the Preferences in Poser - for no particular reason. So, I'm going to go to, on a Macintosh, the Name of the application, Poser 8 Menu to go to Preferences. On the Windows PC Platform you'll find that under the Edit Menu chances are. So, I'm going to go to Preferences and then I'm going to show you that we have our dialog box here that opens up. We have a Document tab, Interface, Library, Render and Miscellaneous. The Launch Behavior tells Poser how you want to launch. For example, I, when I'm doing this tutorial, am always moving thing around - docking things, closing things, floating things. So, when I relaunch Poser I want it to launch back to the Factory State, the way it was when I first installed Poser. If I wanted every modification that I created to stay put, then I would choose to Launch to a Preferred State. I can also choose Set Preferred State. So, I'm going to Launch to Factory every single time on my end. The Undo is very important. It allows you to go backward in time when you make mistakes. Mine is currently set to 100. You can make this as low as you want to, but I find no problem keeping it at 100. I rarely go back that far, by the way. You can also clear the cache now to free up the memory so you can start from scratch. The Smoothing allows you to have objects that are supposed to be angular retain that square and harsh surface when you render. For example, let's say you created a door and the door is rounding off along the edges. Well, with that object selected you can lower this number to get that angularity back. On to the Interface tab, as you can see, we still have the ability to Launch to a Factory or Preferred State. You can also choose to work with a regular Mouse or if you're using a Wacom Tablet or the like you can enable Tablet Mode. You can also change your Units of Measure, so if you want to go with Feet or Inches, Millimeters and more, choose this from the list here. You can also enable your 3D Mouse to Reverse the Cameras, Reverse the Dolly Cameras and Reverse for objects. Under our Library we can tell Poser that when we want to add something to a scene we want to double-click to do that. Or, if we want to replace whatever's in the scene by double-clicking we can choose that as well. I typically just select the object, hit Delete and then add another object. You can also change how you File Search, so you can make it None, Shallow, or Deep to get more options. You can also apply Pose Sets - Apply universal poses for the figures. I keep that on. For Rendering, if you have a computer that has multiple processors it should be able to determine on its own how many Threads to use. So I have multiple processors so mine is set to 4. I can also change my Max cached renders, so that's pretty much how many renders you'd be able to keep in the cache - you can always increase or decrease this number. I keep it at 10. For Miscellaneous I can choose to use file compression, or to use the external binary morph targets when I'm saving files. I can also tell Poser to automatically check on its own for any updates to the application, which is kind of handy. It will tell you when there's a new version of Poser available. You can also place Temporary Files in whatever location you want to. This is kind of handy because if your hard drive is running low on space and you have an external hard drive you can put your Temporary Files there. And, if you're a programmer, which I am not, you can also select your Editor as far as Python. And those are the Preferences you're going to use when you want to change how you interact with Poser 8.
