Introduction / System Preferences

Poser, like many other 3D applications, often require a pretty hefty system to run them efficiently. That's because you're moving around quite a few polygons or the little pieces of a mesh that make up a model. Also when you're dealing with lights and you're dealing with hair and fiber and materials it could really tax your system if you don't have a pretty recent model. So, let's talk about what you might need to run Poser efficiently on both the Windows Platform as well as the Macintosh. We'll start off with the Windows. First of all you're going to have Windows XP or Vista, a 700 Megahertz Pentium Class or compatible processor, although they recommend 1 Gigahertz or faster. As far as RAM, the minimum that you should have is 512 Megabytes, although I recommend more than that, 1 Gigabyte or more, of course. You should have Open GL enabled graphics card and they recommend NVIDIA GeForce and ATI. I believe I have an ATI card in my machine. This is also going to require a 24 bit color display with a minimum resolution of 1024 by 768. To install Poser you should have at least 2 Gigabytes free of hard drive space, although they recommend 4 Gigabytes and that's pretty much because there's a lot of content that comes with your install of Poser. Now, of course, you don't have to install all that stuff, by why not have all those models and all those materials handy? You should have Windows Internet Explorer if you plan to surf the Web, or you can use any compatible web browser that will allow you to, of course, login to any website that you go to every day. There's a place called Content Paradise where you can buy new things for your models and for Poser in general. So you're going to also have to have the Adobe Flash Player 9 and if you're going to buy the physical product instead of downloading it you should have a DVD-ROM drive. For the Macintosh you're going to need Macintosh OS 10.4 or 10.5. You're going to have to have a 700 Megahertz G4 processor, although they recommend an Intel Core Duo, or 1 Gigahertz G4 or faster. Same amount of RAM, 512 as your minimum, and 1 Gigabyte or more, of course, is recommended. You're also going to need an Open GL enabled graphics card and they too recommend for the Mac NVIDIA GeForce or an ATI Radeon. And once again, I think I mentioned that I have an ATI card in my machine and I'm using a Mac. You should have a 1024 by 768 minimum resolution for 24 bit color and the same amount of hard drive space, 2 Gigabytes and 4 recommended and pretty much an Internet connection - Safari, Firefox, or any web browser, so you can access Content Paradise if you wish to add new stuff to Poser. And if you're going to install with a disk you should have a DVD-ROM drive and you also need to have Adobe Flash Player 9. Those are the requirements to run Poser efficiently.
