Beginners Workflow / Texture as Alpha

Subtitles of the Movie

In this movie, we're going to be looking at adding Texture as an Alpha. Okay, so these textures right here, the rock and this one, we're going to fully utilize them to add even further detail to the model. So, by clicking on this texture, did you notice what happened? All my colors went away. Well, actually, in the preview window you see they're still there. So don't worry, they're still there. So, we're going to take this texture and make an Alpha, and while I'm doing this I'm going to go over to my Ground 1, switch it, now I've got to juggle, and go and make it an Alpha. Okay? So, now take the texture and turn it off, and I have two new Alphas within the palette that I can use. These Alphas are far different than the rock texture, because these rocks have a lot of depth value, or high fidelity it's called. So they have a high fidelity from white to black. Here, these are flat, but we can use them for texturing. Okay, let's take this Alpha for an example. What I'm going to do is mount this Alpha, but if I click and drag it out it's going to be square, so I'm going to go into Alpha, and I'm going to turn the Radial fall off On and get this round instead. And now I'm just going to go clicking and dragging and kind of get an idea of what intensity I need for this, so about right there, I've got a 29. Yours is going to be different than mine. It's just the way it is. Okay, so, if I make this a little bit bigger on my brush and click and drag, I'm just going to add a few details here and there. Okay, now I'm going to hop over to my other one and I'm going to start bumping up this grass up a little bit and get an idea what intensity I need for that. Always work way out. You see how I'm working like this? I'm zoomed out like I can scale and zoom in here, but I always want to work out for my piece. Don't ever get caught up on so much of the detail that you're zoomed way in. It accounts for so much of a waste of time, because when I zoom in I can start seeing like little flaws in here and here and here, but in an illustration piece those flaws actually add resolution to your printout, so, you know, you might want to keep those in. I've learned that as an illustrator. These show up in your illustration a little bit, not too much, but when you go to print them out it actually helps with the print out. Just a little tip, pricked up along the ears. Okay, so that's it. That's how you add texture as an Alpha and add the Alpha to your model. Okay, so in the next movie, we're going to be covering how to add even more detail than this.
