Concepts / Static Web content

Subtitles of the Movie

Lets take a look at the way this works in a bit more detail. We are going to have a look at the difference between static and dynamic web content, with a view to seeing how server side scripting languages are important, when the user is viewing dynamic content on their browser. We have the client here, which is going to be a web browser, and we are going to have representation of the server, which is going to be just a representation of a Unix server, which incidentally is displaying some quite random, pseudo information. Don't try and make any sense out of the information out there because it's all just a fake. However the processes that we are going to describe, are exactly the way that the typical static and dynamic web requests take place. So let's first of all take a look at a static web page request. First thing that happens here is that the user requests a specific web page, by typing the URL into the address bar on their browser. As you can see, if you take a look at the little invitation browser window that I've got down there, the user is actually requesting a specific HTML page index.html. And what the server does, a very easy job, all it needs to do is locate that HTML page, which is the file on the service file system, and it simply returns that HTML page to the user, without changing it in any way. And the page is shown on the browser. The user's browser is able to interpret that HTML page and display it quickly. So a very simple and straightforward way of getting some information. This disadvantage here is that, in order for the information to be returned to the user, someone actually had to write that HTML page out in its entirety. There's no way that with a static web page request, any of that information could be changed or modified depending on what the user actually wants to see. They are only able to access that one HTML page and that had to be written out completely or part-coded.
