Concepts / Welcome: what is Perl?
Subtitles of the Movie
Hello! And welcome to the virtual training company's guide to perl. My name is George and I am going to be taking you through this introduction, to the powerful and versatile programming language that is perl. In this first chapter we are going to be, first of all, introducing perl as a language, then looking at perl's use on the World Wide Web, taking a quick look at the kind of tools that you will need in order to get productive with perl, and then we are going to build your very first script. To begin with what is perl? Perl is many things; it can be used in a wide variety of different settings. It's a programming language that is both relatively easy to pick up, and powerful enough to carry you a long way. It's an open source technology, which means that not only is it available for free, it's also open to you taking a look, if you want to, at exactly how it works. And perhaps even contributing to the perl project in some way or the other. It is quite an idiosyncratic language, and that is what makes it loved by many, many programmers the world over. It's called the first post-modern programming language by its creator Larry Wall, and this comment probably shouldn't be taken too seriously, it's quite tongue-in-cheek, but it has an element of truth nevertheless. Perl doesn't make you code in a specific way. It's a very flexible language that lets you get the tasks done in the way you want to. Perl is a powerful language, but it's also very fun to use. And finally a very important thing about the use of perl in today's industry, is that it's very widely used on the web. The web probably wouldn't be the same without perl.
