Cloned Portrait / Prepare Background
Subtitles of the Movie
The cloner variants in Painter have always been extremely powerful brushes, and have increased in number and variety in every version. And in version 7 there are about 26 of these things not counting the x-cloners, which are designed to create distortion. We are going to create a painted clone of this teenage boy, which might end up looking something like this. And this is not simply a matter of clicking buttons like you would with a filter but using brush strokes, so there's bound to be a variety in one version to another. So let's begin by, first of all closing this one. I don't want to be unduly influenced by my earlier effort. And actually before I go to make the clone, I'd like to add a few pixels of white around this image. And to do that I'll go to canvas size and add let's say 25 pixels of white to each edge; the reason for that is I would like to be able, for example to make a vignette edge or a rough edge where color doesn't go all the way to the edge, and now I'm ready to make my clone copy. There it is and rather than simply select all and delete which is my typical way of beginning a painting, I am going to take advantage of one of the cloner brushes that will let me smear these pixels to create more of a looser background. So, the smeary bristle or the smeary camel cloner I think will do the trick and I'll just kind of go in here and scribble so that I can eliminate detail without eliminating some of the basic color and tonality that I would want as my background. I think it is difficult to start with a stark white background, and it seems to be more in keeping with traditional painting techniques to lay in a background of tonality and then go in and add details. I am trying to smear away this edge and just have some tonality in there where it needs to be. Scroll down a little bit and this smeary bristle cloner is not just a smeary brush. It's also a cloner, which means that it is picking up tonality and color from the source image. We are going to switch to the smeary camel cloner just to see how that differs somewhat. And these two smeary cloners are new in Painter 7. So that looks like it's going to be a good beginning.
