Introduction / Formulating Your Study Plan
Subtitles of the Movie
Each individual has a different learning style and will require a different study plan. In this movie, I'll provide you with some tips to incorporate into your study plan so that you can include them into your own mode of learning. There are some areas that you must include within your studies so I'd like to help you clarify what those are and offer some recommendations along the way. The first is something that you're already doing just by being a part of this course. It's to go through the VTC series since we touch on the PMI SP Exam specifically as well as include several practice questions for you to work through. There are three parts to the full course series and the final part will include an extended section of exam practice questions. You also receive workbook exercises along the way so you'll benefit if you're a hand-on person and learn best that way. The second recommendation is to familiarize yourself with the PMBOK Guide. Doing a straight read-through of the PMBOK Guide is not always an appealing thing for everyone so if you find it to be a difficult read, going through the introductory sections of each chapter will be helpful at a minimum. But make sure that you understand the concept behind the processes, the process groups and the knowledge areas. That's the most important thing. The reason is that a foundation of project management is still needed. Don't bog yourself down with too much information but just being exposed to the terminology will make it worth it. There are two critical items that should be part of your study plan. You should thoroughly understand the chapter in the PMBOK Guide that deals with time management. You should know this chapter inside and out including the inputs, tools and techniques and outputs of the processes. I can't stress enough how important this information is to the exam. Number four is the next critical item. You should be extremely familiar with the practice standard for scheduling, which is also issued by PMI. If you're a PMI member, you can access and download the PMBOK Guide and the practice standard for scheduling for free from PMI's website. I'll pull up an example of PMI's website to show you how to access them. Simply log into the website and remember, you must log in since you need to be a member of PMI in order to access and download these standards for free. On the left-hand side of the screen you'll see the login window. Click on Resources in the top menu. Then click on Standards on the left-hand side of the screen and you'll see Library Standards as one of the sub-options under Standards. When you click on that, it'll bring up a list of standards and you'll see the PMBOK Guide, along with many other standards including the practice standard for scheduling. From there you'll be able to download a digital copy. If you'd like a hard copy, you can order it through PMI's Marketplace. Again, I can't stress how important the practice standard for scheduling is to the exam. Getting back to our study plan, I highly recommend reading the chapters within the PMBOK Guide on communications, risk and cost very closely. While you don't have to know the information inside and out like the time management chapter, you'll need to know several key items within these processes. As we go through this course series, I'll be covering this information as well. The final two are just recommendations. If you learn well using flashcards, we go through terms and concepts throughout the course that you gain a lot of value by putting into flashcards. And my final recommendation is to take a full-length practice exam. Again, this is highly recommended. Going through a full-length exam is mentally grueling so making sure that you go through the experience at least once prior to taking the actual exam is important to preparing yourself properly. We use a few different learning styles within VTC, such as listening to a lecture, going through exam practice questions and having you go through exercises and the recommended flashcards. If you're going through this movie and you still feel as though you don't know where to start, feel free to send me an e-mail. You'll find my contact information at the end of this course. On that note, we'll wrap up this movie, along with this section so we can dive right in.
