Introduction / Who Should Take This Course
Subtitles of the Movie
Building, generating and controlling a project schedule is not easy. While this course will focus on preparing for the PMI SP Exam, it will also benefit project managers looking to strengthen their skills in the area of project scheduling. In this movie, I'll go through some points to help you determine whether this course is a good fit for you and a good investment of your time. I went through the course contents in the previous movie, which will have already given you an idea of what to expect. Of the three courses within this course series, this one will spend more time in developing the necessary foundation of a schedule, including the all-important list of activities, commonly referred to as tasks. How detailed should your tasks be? What inputs do you need and what needs to be considered in placing those activities in the proper order? These are the types of question that I'll be answering. There are many factors for successfully managing and leading a project and scheduling is one of those important blocks. In order for a project to be successful, you need to develop a realistic schedule, be aware of risks within the schedule and be sure that you maintain a good level of control. That means that project scheduling is an essential part of project management so it's no wonder that there are individuals whose sole job is to simply manage the schedule. These days we tend to rely heavily on software and that can dilute our understanding of how things work, including something as basic as the potential impact of dependencies and making sure that you document and are aware of those dependencies. But having a strong, solid understanding of the project scheduling foundation is critical and that's why I'd recommend this course to project managers; not just those preparing for the PMI SP exam. With all that said, I'd like to again clarify that our focus of the course will center around the PMI Scheduling Professional Exam. So while you'll develop a foundation of the topics that we'll cover, it's not meant to go into full-depth coverage. This isn't a Project Scheduling 101 course. You'll be expected to know what some things like the PMI Gantt chart are and some basic project management and project scheduling terms. However, throughout the course I'll be covering some of these basics in terms of how the Project Management Institute defines them. Remember that PMI is the issuing organization of the credential and it's essential that you understand PMI terminology. Rather than getting highly technical and delivering a 101 type course, I'll work with you to help you fully understand the concepts and the steps involved in the initial building of a schedule. On that note, the following are those individuals that would benefit from taking this course: those studying for the PMI SP Certification Exam, those studying for the CAPM or PMP Certification Exams, since all this information that we'll be covering is also relevant and anyone looking to gain further education in the area of project scheduling. Before we move further, I'd like to highlight something that I quickly said a moment ago, which is meant for those preparing for a PMI exam. Often project and scheduling managers do have a difficult time with this exam, even more so with those of less experience and there's a reason for that. The primary reason is that you need to answer questions in terms of PMI's perspective and that can sometimes be difficult for experienced managers to do. This doesn't mean that all other methods are incorrect, but holding one of PMI's certification show that at a minimum you have the given level of knowledge of the processes and standards backed by PMI. So while you may follow another methodology for conducting project scheduling, remember that a company may hire you specifically because you hold a PMI SP credential and therefore may expect you manage your project schedule as laid out within the PMBOK Guide. Hopefully I've helped you clarify whether this course could be of value to you. If you're unsure whether pursuing the PMI Scheduling Professional Credential is of interest to you, we'll be covering an overview of the certification and exam requirements in the next two movies. And that brings this movie to a close.
