In order to manage and even pinpoint risk it's important to understand the Project Environment as well as the Project itself. For example, understanding the project's scope, the deliverables, and the project objectives is significant in identifying risks and knowing how to appropriately respond to them, but so is knowing the physical, cultural, and social factors influencing the project, this also includes the technology involved as an additional example. In VTC's PMBOK Part 1 course, we reviewed the Project Environment with a focus on: Cultural and Social Environment; International and Political Environment; and, the Physical Environment. This movie will also focus on the Project Environment but with a closer focus on both Internal and External factors. Now knowing the project and the Project Environment leads to a misunderstanding of the impact that a risk can have, which is why a closer look is necessary. To start, let's clarify what is meant by Project Environment, and remember that we're looking at the Project Environment from the perspective of risk. There are both Internal and External elements that impact and influence a project and that make up the Project Environment. You'll find all kinds of examples as to what exactly the Project Environment entails, but what we'll go through should give you a general idea of what's involved, which is why it's important. As an introduction, the Internal Project Environment includes: the Organizational Structure and Culture where the project is being managed; the Project Stakeholders and their Identification, this includes suppliers and understanding the influence that these stakeholders can have to the project; the Competition; Consumers; and, Technology used. External factors that impact and influence the project and are part of the Project Environment include: the Natural Environment; Financial and Economical Situation the Industry; Human and Health Safety; Political and Legal Situation. These are factors directly tied to the project and several of them are self-explanatory and some I'll explain further. We'll start with Organizational Structure in the movie that follows. Because you need to understand organizational structures for the PMI RMP Certification Exam, we'll spend some extra time going through this one. The Project Environment revolves around the company's type of organizational structure, for example, is it a Functional, Projectized, or a Matrix organization? In the next movie we'll go through a Snapshot Review of the Organizational Structures. We'll close out this movie here and continue in the next movie.
