PMBOK Guide Review / Project Integration Management
Subtitles of the Movie
In this section we'll go through a review of the 6 knowledge areas covered in PMBOKS part 2 and 3 and the remaining three knowledge areas will be covered in detail within this course. This movie will focus on the first knowledge area in the PMBOK Guide which is Project Integration Management Knowledge Area. This is the largest knowledge area of the nine containing 7 processes which spans from the initiating stages of the project all the way through project closure. The knowledge area overall is concerned with identifying, defining, combining, unifying and coordinating the various processes and project management activities of the project and the goal is to accomplish the project objectives. If you've gone through PMBOKS Part 1 through 3 then you already know how important it is to understand the process flow, how the processes within a knowledge area interact with each other and also how they interact with processes outside of the knowledge area. Within the Integration Knowledge Area you can see how the project charter is necessary for the preliminary project scope statement to run its course which needs the project charter. The same for the develop project management plan which relies on the preliminary project scope statement process to proceed. The directed manage project execution process executes the project management plan. Monitor and control project work monitors the work and the integrated change control process approves, rejects and oversees all changes and finally we have the project closure. The orange arrows are meant to show internal interaction within the knowledge area and the green arrows show the interaction with processes from outside of the knowledge area. Now let's move onto briefly review a snapshot of the knowledge area's processes. The develop project charter is the first process of the project involving initially the project selection process. Once the project has been identified this process saw the creation of the project charter which formally authorized the project including the authority of the project manager to assign the resources to the project. The develop preliminary project scope statement process created the initial project scope statement that project decisions would be based on until enough information is available during the planning stages to create a detailed version of the project scope statement. In develop project management plan the subsidiary plans and component plans that make up the project management plan are created and then further flushed out through out the other knowledge areas. Notice that an input into this process is literally all the project management processes collectively. In the directed manage project execution process the project team works together to execute the project management plan. This will result in an accomplished deliverables and work performance information detailing the status of the work. Beginning with this process you can really see how the processes are iterative. For example we have requested changes that are submitted into the integrated change control process, those requests that have been approved are sent back as inputs and then they're implemented through this process which you can see in the list of outputs. The monitor and control project work process is concerned with controlling the project performance to make sure that it is progressing as it should be. Forecasts are generated which allows the project team to be one step ahead of the project as a proactive measure and recommendations are made to bring the project back on track when slippage occurs. The integrated change control process manages all project changes, the point is to have an integrated change control board that presides over the changes and makes decisions in the best interest of the project rather than the best interest of a department or entity. You can see through the outputs approved and rejected recommendations and requests. The final process of this knowledge area involves project closure and also project phase closure. It's making sure that all loose ends are tied and receives formal acceptance which is important and something that is not always done. It does this through the creation of two important procedures, the administrative closure procedure and the contract closure procedure and as you can see from the next output generating the accepted deliverables or product and achieving final closure. Again that was the final process of this knowledge area which concludes our overview of the Project Integration Management Knowledge Area.
