PMBOK Guide Overview / Process Groups

Subtitles of the Movie

In the previous movie, we covered a brief review of the project life cycle and its phases. I mentioned that project phases and the project itself consist of five process groups, initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and closing. These process groups are made up of forty-four processes that allow the project team to manage the project successfully. Once again, these process groups include initiating, where the project or project phase is defined or authorized. Here our objective is to develop a project charter and also to assign a project manager. It contains two processes, develop project charter, and develop preliminary project scope statement. The planning process group is where the project objectives are defined, refined, and the planning of the project takes place. So the objectives of this group include developing the project management plan, create WBS, and identifying the risk. The planning process group contains the highest number of processes as twenty-one. Here, is where we develop the plans that encompass the development management plan. This includes things like the project schedule, risk management, budget, and so forth. Executing is the next process group, where the project work is carried out, where the objective here is completing the defined within the project plan, coordinating and managing resources, implementing approved changes, and distributing information. Monitoring and controlling is the fourth process group and regularly monitors and measures process and identifies ways to correct variances. It is the second largest process group. A large amount of effort is placed on monitoring the project's process and status in order to ensure that the project remains on course. These processes share that goal. And finally, our closing process group contains two processes. These processes are concerned with the closing of not just the project, but on a smaller scale, also the individual project phases. This is where the formal acceptance of a product, service or result takes place. I mentioned earlier that there were a total of forty-four processes within these five process groups. What I'll do now is take you through a quick snapshot of these processes. Initiating has a total of two processes, planning has a total of twenty-one, executing has a total of seven, monitoring and controlling has a total of twelve, and closing has a total of two. As you may recall, these processes do not occur in the order seen here, some processes rely on the ending results or outputs of other processes in order to get started, so there are several processes that will need to occur in a particular order. However, depending on the size of this project, not all of these processes may take place within a project phase or within a project. The project team must make this decision depending on the influencing factors surrounding the project and again, depending on the size and the complexity of the project. And that wraps up our overview of the five process groups. Keep in mind that these reviews are meant to move quickly an only provide you a glimpse into their meaning. Next, we'll move forward to look at the nine knowledge areas.
