Project Integration Management / Introduction to the Processes
Subtitles of the Movie
In this movie, we will take a broad yet more detailed look at the seven processes within the project integration management knowledge area. This movie serves as a high-level review of these processes that were introduced in the last movie with the purpose of digesting them together at the same time. It's important to keep the bigger picture in mind rather than beginning by focusing on the processes individually. This will help you keep them in better perspective and aware of other pieces that exist within the project. Since the processes do not occur neatly one after another, but instead they overlap, they rely on results of other processes, they are iterative and so on. Move on to our high-level review of the integration processes, they include develop project charter. This process belongs to the initiating process group and is responsible for formally authorizing the project or project phase. The project charter plays a very important role within a project and if you are taking the certification exam, you can expect a few questions on this process alone. Next, we have develop preliminary project scope statement. This process also belongs to the initiating process group and remember that these two processes we've looked at so far are the only processes within that process group and notice that they belong to the same knowledge area. This process develops an initial project scope statement using the project charter and the statement of work. It is more of a high-level description and a more detailed project scope statement is created in the scope knowledge area, which we'll also review in this course. The third process is develop project management plan. This process belongs to the planning process group and it creates the initial project management plan. This is just the early stage of the project management plan and as we move into the other knowledge areas, we'll see this fleshed out. At this point, we'll document the necessary actions to define, prepare, integrate and coordinate the subsidiary plans that'll be added later on as we just mentioned. This subsidiary plans are all created within the planning process group so you'll want to keep that in mind as well. The fourth process in the integration knowledge area is direct and manage project execution. As it's fairly obvious, this process belongs to the executing process group and here we execute the work that is defined in the project management plan. Things approved by the integrated change control board are implemented here, such as the corrective actions, changes and defect repairs. Next, we have monitor and control project work, which monitors and controls the processes that are used to initiate, plan, execute and close the project. As you may have guessed, this belongs to the monitoring and controlling process group. In the previous process we reviewed, I mentioned how items are implemented. Here's where they are recommended. The sixth process is integrate and change control, which is part of the monitoring and controlling process group. This is the process where change requests that were recommended in the previous process we reviewed are approved or denied. The purpose here is to control changes to the deliverables and the scope, keeping the project on a successful track. And the final process in this knowledge area is close project. This is part of the closing processes group. This process is responsible for tying the loose ends that remain by finalizing the activities within all the process groups. And the intent here is to formally close out the project or the project phase. As I was going through the processes, you may have caught on to the fact that there is interaction among them. For instance, the creation of the project charter was necessary for the preliminary project scope statement to be created. The preliminary project scope statement was necessary for develop project management plan process to begin. The preliminary project scope statement is also necessary in order for us to begin the scope definition process, which we'll do in the next knowledge area, scope. The project management plan, which is the results of the develop project plan process is necessary in order to direct and manage the project execution. This process is also necessary in order to move through all the other processes within the other eight knowledge areas outside of integration. And the result of these processes feed right back into this one in order to flesh out the project management plan. The project work must be executed in order to move into the next process, which is monitor and control project work. Naturally, if you do not execute the work, you would have nothing to monitor and control. Remember that in this process recommended corrective actions, preventive actions, changes and defect repairs are made. These recommendations are fed into the integrated change control process, which approves or denies them. The approved and denied changes are then fed back into the direct and manage project execution process for implementation. It is possible that some of the approved changes may affect the project scope, so then this would feed into the scope definition process that we see to the very left of the diagram. Approved deliverables are then fed into the close project process, as is the result of contract administration, which occurs outside of the integration knowledge area. Close project feeds into multiple processes as well, including contract closure, which falls outside of integration, direct and manage project execution and during the close of the project, it can also result in a final product, service or result that is given to the customer. Hopefully this broad overview has given you an understanding of how these processes function together. Armed with this information, you'll come into the individual process reviews with a greater understanding of the bigger picture. This is especially important in this knowledge area, project integration. In the next movie we'll discuss the integration knowledge area assessment, which will measure your current level of understanding. After the assessment, we'll jump right into a detailed review of each process. And that wraps up this movie on the overview of processes within the project integration management knowledge area.
