Now let's move on to our next subject and that's talking about updating and managing software packages. Now if you've used other package management software in possibly Linux distributions or even older Solaris then you're probably going to do okay on Solaris 11. Solaris 11 uses a new system called the Image Packaging System or IPS. And if you've ever used things like Apt-Get or D Package or even RedHat's Package Manager then you're going to be very adept at using IPS. It's very similar to those package managers. For the exam objectives for the OCA, for package management what we want you to be able to do is explain IPS, kind of understand how it's used and what it's for. We want to be able to update Solaris 11 using IPS. We also want to be able to manage any software package on the system using both the GUI Package Manager and the Command Line Interface. We'll also discuss how IPS will help you administer boot environments. Now boot environments are basically different environments that you can boot into, different boot images if you will for your system that contain different software versions and different tools. You can create those using IPS. We also want you to be able to troubleshoot any software update issues that you might encounter with Solaris 11. And of course we'll be using IPS for that. So having said all that, let's go ahead and move into discussing what IPS really is and how it works.
