And we will look at the last Action that we're going to discuss in this discussion of Remote Management, which is Diagnostics. The Diagnostics utility in the ZENworks Remote Management Suite is very straightforward. You can find out things about the operating system, for example, the Windows memory. This particular workstation has 256 megs of physical memory, 126 megs of which are free. You can look at the Environment on the workstation. In the Environment you will find the processor architecture, the number of processors, et cetera. It's not exactly like going out to the Command Prompt and typing Set, or looking at the Set Parameters in the System Properties on the local workstation. You will get vastly different information looking at this Environment variable. You can check out the Device Drivers and whether they are running or not. You can check out the Services. Even though you can see the Services you can't actually interact with a service. If you double-click it or right-click it, it doesn't really do anything. It just shows you which services are present; whether they're stopped or running. You can also look at all three Event Logs. Unlike the Event Log on the local workstation this Event Log Viewer shows you the oldest information first instead of the newest so you would have to scroll down to the bottom to find the current information for the Allocation Event Log in this case. You will notice that the ZENworks Remote Management Agents log all of its actions in the Event Log. In this case it showed that we started a Remote Diagnostics session at 1:18 am on 3-9-2009. It shows who did it, and what workstation they were on. This way if an end user says, "I swear, someone was in my workstation moving my mouse around doing all kinds of stuff and I didn't have any control over it," you could look in the Event Log and find out who was screwing with the end user's head. You can also look at the Network Parameters. There are the Network Connections. Since no one is currently logged in on this workstation obviously there's nothing there. It tells you how the Novell Client is configured. It tells you about Print Captures. All of this is just standard networking stuff with the NetWare client. So, all in all you can get a fair amount of information about the workstation just from this Remote Diagnostics program. If you couple this Remote Diagnostics with an actual Workstation Inventory, which we will discuss elsewhere in the Title, then you can get a whole lot of information about exactly what applications are installed, how much disk free space you have on the machine, et cetera, et cetera. This way you have the reports to back you up when your end user calls and says, "I can't run AutoCAD." You can tell them you can't run AutoCAD because you have 20 megs of disk free space on Drive C, and you only have 128 megs of RAM. So, as you can see the Remote Management Suite in ZENworks Desktop Management 7 is quite feature-rich. It's on par with just about any other network management suite out there. There are some tools that do these functions a little better and a little more cleanly integrated, however, none of them really integrate all that well with eDirectory. They all assume you're running Active Directory and if you're not running Active Directory and you're relying on ZENworks to handle all of that for you then this is the best bet for your remote management needs. And with that, that concludes our discussion of Remote Management.
